UNKNOWN PHOTOGRAPHER (biographical data unknown) The artist Maximilian Reinitz silver gelatin print/paper 22 x 16 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 100 - 200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 100 Maximilian Reinitz (Vienna 1872 - 1935 Vienna) was an Austrian painter of New Objectivity and Cubism. Reinitz studied from 1898 to 1902 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, first in the nature class with Johann Caspar Herterich, then with Ludwig von Herterich, Carl von Marr and Peter von Halm. After completing his studies, he visited Budapest, Dresden and Berlin and went on study trips to Italy and Albania. From 1914 Reinitz worked in Vienna again. In 1922 he became an honorary member of the Hagenbund. He was a supporter of modern trends in European painting; his works were based on the aesthetics of Cubism and New Objectivity. His works shown at the Spring Exhibition of 1922 provoked outrage from conservative critics. In order to escape the conflicts, Reinitz lived in seclusion, far away from the Viennese painting milieu. Reinitz only received true recognition posthumously. Maximilian Reinitz

    Est: €18,000 - €30,000

(Wien 1872–1935) Two ladies in a room, c. 1930, on the reverse signed not by the artist’s hand, oil on canvas, 80 x 55.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Austria Maximilian Reinitz, who was a member of the Hagenbund, turned to the New Objectivity style in the 1920s. His forms became clearer and simpler and, thanks to a lucid colour scheme, convey their own magic of silence and mystery. This picture also contains a coded message: the half-nude woman standing in front of a dark curtain on the left puts her arms in a circle around her pregnant belly, the same woman sits on the right in a yellow dress in front of a window from which the view extends into a wide landscape. Dream, longing, expectation, hope, all are inherent in this picture.
