He entered the Paris School of Fine Arts through a competition, being ranked 3rd among 400 competitors, out of 80 student places. This reason was addressed by him several times. While it is not a piece that represents him, it is valid as a document. The competition test for Paris presented by Silva Porto and which is in the Porto museum (Soares dos Reis) also did not represent him, far from it. With slight restoration and damage to the frame. Signed in the lower right corner. Titled on the back. Measurements: 130 x 91 cm; 142 x 104 cm (frame). Work in which the author represents a lady in an elegant pose. The woman directs her gaze towards the spectator, in an accomplice way, sketching a small grimace of security and integrity that dignifies and monumentalises her presence in the composition. Despite the neutral background and the static nature of the central figure, the pose and clothing of the sole protagonist create an image charged with instantaneity, typical of female representations of the late 19th century. This image combines the formal sensuality of the sinuous line, typically modernist, with the great realism with which a strictly contemporary image has been captured. It is a dynamic and elegant drawing with the subject of the woman at the absolute centre, captured through a vaporous and sumptuous brushstroke characteristic of Reis's painting. Furthermore, the earthy tones with ochre and brown tones dominating the composition were a common resource in the work of the Portuguese master, as can be seen in the portrait of Rainha D. Amélia, located in the Pena Palace, or for example in his work "Study of a Peasant Girl", which belongs to the Casa dos Patudos collection. It is worth mentioning, with regard to the subject matter, that the female figure was the protagonist of the 19th century; young, elegant ladies caught in their moments of leisure, reading, strolling or looking at the viewer, melancholic and tempting, or as in this case a modern, high society woman, regal and defiant in her contact with the viewer. Carlos Antonio Rodrigues Dos Reis, better known as Carlos Reis, was a Portuguese painter highly regarded for his work as a landscape and portrait painter. He began his artistic education at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, which he attended between 1881 and 1889, where he was a pupil of Silva Porto, Simões de Almeida and Miguel Ângelo Lupi. He later moved to Paris, where he entered the École des Beaux-Arts thanks to a scholarship granted by the Portuguese government. In 1895, he returned to Portugal, where he continued his artistic education. Due to his wide reputation and artistic skill he achieved a great reputation, which earned him, among other things, the post of director of the Museum of Ancient Art, a position he held in 1905, and that of first director of the Museum of Contemporary Art. Throughout his career he received numerous distinctions, including the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Dresden and Barcelona in 1897, the Grand Prix of Rio de Janeiro in 1919 and 1922, the First Class Medal in 1902, and the Medal of Honour in 1906 from the Society of Fine Arts-Art, and shortly before his death he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Santiago da Espada. In 1942 a museum was created in his memory in Torres Novas, which houses an important part of his work. His paintings are also preserved in several private collections (in Portugal, Spain and other countries) and important institutions (Museu Nacional de Belas Artes de Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Museu Militar de Lisboa, Palacio de S. Bento, etc.).
