BlackArtsProjects in association with Chalk Horse Gallery, Sydney, NSW 26 June - 12 July 2014, ©Reko Rennie / GuestWork Agency, 2024 Reko Rennie is a Kamilaroi artist based in Melbourne whose works explore issues of the Aboriginal identity within an urban environment. His commanding works are largely biographical and combine the iconography of his Kamilaroi heritage with stylistic elements of graffiti and street art. Rennie grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne and has strong family connections to Kamilaroi country in northern New South Wales. He has had no formal training, but has refined his skills through years of work as a graffiti artist. Rennie employs a variety of mediums and forms from spray painted installations, to neon signage, cast metal sculptures and prints on paper. He is most recognised for his large scale site-specific works with his trademark use of the repeated diamond pattern in hard-edge form and in the brilliant colours synonymous with street art. "These diamond forms are drawn from the dendroglyphs (carved trees) found in Kamilaroi country. ''No Sleep Till Dreamtime' takes its cue from the Beastie Boys single 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn', released on their album 'Licensed to Ill' in 1986. As an urban Indigenous Australian, my work often references the hip-hop and graffiti subcultures that were influential on my artistic practice in my formative years. In this work I have merged traditional Kamilaroi diamond-shaped designs, hand drawn symbols and repetitive patterning to subvert romantic ideologies of Aboriginal identity." Reko Rennie, 2014 This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

About 100 million of these stamps were circulated around the world at a time when Aborigines were not recognised as citizens of Australia, he says. 'It's such a beautiful image which was exported around the world, advertising this kitschy Australia with its Aboriginal people but at the same time we did not have citizenship'." Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie’s art can be interpreted as a key to understanding the history, politics, the tensions experienced by urban Aboriginal people in contemporary society through artworks that explore the legacies of colonisation, land rights, deaths in custody and identity politics. Having discovered graffiti culture in the late 1980s Rennie went on to develop an artistic repertoire based upon Indigenous symbolism, native animals and flora, and the integration of personal and national insignia. The Australian coat of arms features a kangaroo and an emu, both Australian national symbols. Seen in the light of Australia’s harsh environment and significant encroachments on their habitat, they symbolise Aboriginal survival and invincibility. The image of the Urban Aboriginal with his spear poised for release can be read as a powerful sign of resistance and an embrace of one’s own culture. In this graphic image, the coat of arms evokes the crafted silver filigree on decorative colonial pieces such as those which incorporated etched emu eggs and quasi-(Ab)original motifs.

One of the references slated for change stated that ‘in reckoning the numbers of the people of the Commonwealth, or of a State or other part of the Commonwealth, aboriginal (sic) natives should not be counted.' 90.77% of respondents voted for change – the highest YES vote ever recorded in a Federal referendum. The YES font featured in my work was used in advertising and promotional material prior to the referendum during a period when momentum for political change within Indigenous affairs was growing. Fifty years on from the 1967 referendum, this country and its Government still have a long way to go in recognising and restoring the rights of the traditional owners of this land" (The Artist, 2017) © Reko Rennie
