EDWARD (PECHMANN) RENOUF AMERICAN, 1906-1999 UNTITLED SCULPTURE WITH ORANGE AND GREEN Cast iron, wood and mixed media Welded farm implements, typical of Renouf's work in the 1960s Catalogue note: Born in China to an American academic father and a German mother, Edward von Pechmann Renouf attended Harvard and Columbia before moving to Mexico City in 1941. Renouf spent fifteen years in Mexico, where he studied art with muralist Carlos Merida and worked closely with influential Surrealist painter and philosopher Woolfgang Paalen. Around 1959, Renouf left Mexico and settled in Washington, Connecticut. He began frequently exhibiting his iron sculptures, often made with repurposed farm equipment, at galleries and museums in New York City. In 1960 the artist Fairfield Porter, a former Harvard classmate of Renouf, wrote: "He welds sculpture out of junk like Stankiewicz ... and he makes things that illustrate his memory and fantasy ... Edward has developed an almost academic manner of the best sort, meaning, a kind of morality of openness, as one who has seen enough to become civilized ..." In the 1960s, Renouf's sculpture was featured in three of the Whitney Museum of American Art's annual exhibitions. His work was also the subject of solo exhibitions at the New York Botanical Garden, Sculpture Center New York and Ruth White Gallery, and group exhibitions at Zabriskie Gallery and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others. Around 1971, Renouf expanded his focus to include abstract paintings and drawings as well as sculpture. He was represented by Allan Stone Gallery, who hosted two solo exhibitions of Renouf's paintings in 1978 and 1980, as well as Renouf's final New York show in 1982. Renouf passed away in 1999; two years later, the Washington Art Association in Connecticut held a retrospective exhibition of his work. Renouf's work is featured in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), Phoenix Art Museum (Phoenix, AZ) and Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, CT), among others.

EDWARD (PECHMANN) RENOUF AMERICAN, CONNECTICUT, 1906-1999 PICCOLOMINI, 1971 Oil on canvas Verso inscribed on canvas: "Piccolomini" / Renouf 71 Catalogue note: Born in China to an American academic father and a German mother, Edward von Pechmann Renouf attended Harvard and Columbia before moving to Mexico City in 1941. In 1960 the artist Fairfield Porter, a former Harvard classmate of Renouf, wrote: "He welds sculpture out of junk like Stankiewicz ... and he makes things that illustrate his memory and fantasy...Edward has developed an almost academic manner of the best sort, meaning, a kind of morality of openness, as one who has seen enough to become civilized..." In the 1960s, Renouf's sculpture was featured in three of the Whitney Museum of American Art's annual exhibitions.

EDWARD RENOUF (1906-1999) was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of mediums, and is known for his paintings, drawings and sculpture. His work was exhibited in several of these institutions in 2011 as part of The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. This work is from Renouf's Infinites series in which he used what he referred to as "sgraffito,"(1) a technique of scratching minute scribbles through wet black oil paint with a pin point, revealing tiny traces of the gray acrylic beneath. Emanating from his long fascination with "the aleatory richness of random, often messy, and evidently impulsive quick lines" in Rambrandt's drawings, Renouf's planes of tiny jittery gestures culminate as "abstract drawings of a calligraphy that represent nothing but itself." Renouf has stated: "Philosphically, my INFINITES…are an emphatic statement of the unitary nature of existence." Intensely aware of the Far East's "aesthetic and intuitive genius and the so convincingly rational philosophical religions," Renouf approached painting as object and image at once, seeking "the holistic grasp of existential unity" and "paradox without which no profound understanding is possible." Edward Renouf (American, 1906-1999) Oil Painting

        Est: $300 - $500

Edward Renouf (American, 1906-1999) Untitled, 1974. Oil painting on masonite. Unframed. Provenance: Collection of Allan Stone, New York. Size: 24" x 16" (61 x 41 cm). EDWARD RENOUF (1906-1999) was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of mediums, and is known for his paintings, drawings and sculpture. He was born in China of an American Father and German mother. He graduated from Andover Academy in 1924 and received a BA from Harvard 1928. After three years at Columbia University he spent time in Europe where he studied drawing. He spent fifteen years in Mexico finally settling in Connecticut in 1958 when he began exhibiting. His work has been shown across the US, with several solo exhibitions at the Allan Stone Gallery. Renouf's work is held in numerous public collections including the Boise Art Museum, ID; the Huntington Museum of Art, WV; Las Vegas Art Museum, NV; Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Phoenix Art Museum, AZ; Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT. Emanating from his long fascination with "the aleatory richness of random, often messy, and evidently impulsive quick lines" in Rambrandt's drawings, Renouf's planes of tiny jittery gestures culminate as "abstract drawings of a calligraphy that represent nothing but itself." Renouf has stated: "Philosphically, my INFINITES…are an emphatic statement of the unitary nature of existence." Intensely aware of the Far East's "aesthetic and intuitive genius and the so convincingly rational philosophical religions," Renouf approached painting as object and image at once, seeking "the holistic grasp of existential unity" and "paradox without which no profound understanding is possible."
