      Milton Resnick, 1917-2004 (Ukraine/USA)

      Est: £30,000 - £60,000

Milton Resnick (1917-2004) Ukraine/Russia/France/America (New York). Abstract composition. 1956. Oil on canvas, size 101,5 x 76,2 cm (40 x 30 inches). Frame dimensions 107,5 x 82 cm (42 1/3 x 32 1/4 inches). Signed and dated at the bottom. Milton Resnick was born in Russia, and arrived in New York City in 1922 at age five. He settled in Brooklyn with his family and attended public school where a teacher re-named him from his birth name of Rachmiel and nickname of Milya to Milton. At age 14, he enrolled in the commercial art programme at the Pratt Institute Evening School of Art in Brooklyn, but a teacher there suggested he switch to fine arts, so the next year he enrolled in the American Artists School in New York City. Ad Reinhardt, future Abstract Expressionist, was a classmate, and they shared a budding interest in abstraction. During the Depression Resnick was in the Easel and Mural Division of the WPA of the Works Progress Administration. By 1938, he had his own studio on West 21st Street, and there was near Willem de Kooning with whom he formed a close friendship in the 1960s. However, Resnick's art career was interrupted by World War II, and he served five years in the army, stationed in Iceland and Europe. After the War, he lived for three years in Paris, where among others, he associated with modernist sculptors Alberto Giacometti and Constantin Brancusi. In 1948, Milton Resnick returned to New York, and used his G.I. benefits to enroll in abstract expressionist painter Hans Hofmann's school. He also took a studio on East 8th Street, near Jackson Pollock, de Kooning, and Franz Kline, and in September met artist Pat Passlof, whom he married in 1961. During the 1950s and 1960s, Resnick earned respect for his Abstract Expressionist paintings and was also unique for being one of the few New York artists to have a large working space for large-scale canvases. In 1976, he purchased the space that served him to the end of his active career, an abandoned synagogue on Eldridge Street on New York's lower east side. It was near his wife's studio, which was another abandoned synagogue and purchased by the couple in 1963. During his career, Resnick was also an art educator, who taught at Pratt Institute and New York University beginning 1964.

      MILTON RESNICK Untitled.

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

MILTON RESNICK Untitled. Gouache and watercolor on cream wove paper, 1960. 960x1265 mm; 38x50 inches. Signed and dated in gouache, lower left recto. Provenance: Gifted by the artist to private collection, New York; thence by descent to current owner, private collection, New York. Resnick (1917-2004) trained at the Pratt Institute, New York, where he studied commercial art, before transferring to the American Artists School to focus on painting. Among the first generation of the New York School artists, he associated with early Abstract Expressionists such as Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning. Resnick sought to dissolve form and image, employing the sculptural elements of the paint. He eclipsed the traditional modes of Abstract Expressionism in the mid-1940s and created dense and heavily impastoed paintings that sometimes weighed more than several hundred pounds. His foray into the materiality of paint was predictive of artists such as Cy Twombly and Frank Stella who focused on process and an "all-over" approach to developing a canvas. Resnick completed a number of large-scale, expressive gouache paintings on paper around 1960 (another similar work was offered at Sotheby's, New York, March 9, 2012, lot 170), while exhibiting with the Howard Wise Gallery, New York.

It is meant to have impact on the soul. It is the unpremeditated form the picture takes as a result of the struggle to express motive, to capture the sequence of ephemeral experience, the tragic anxiety, the constant brooding over being and not-being, over bloom and decay, over life and death. It is not technique, but process". -Askart

Resnick made and maintained friendships with Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning while in New York. Resnick was one of the founding members of the artist's club, known simply as 'The Club,' in 1949. It became known as the den of what was later to be called the Abstract Expressionists. Other founding members included Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Ad Reinhardt, and Jack Tworkov. The Club became famous, a venue for intellectuals and luminaries like Dylan Thomas, Hannah Arendt, John Cage, Joseph Campbell, Buckminster Fuller, Paul Goodman, William Barrett, Edgar Varese and the young Pierre Boulez. In 1951 he participated in the 9th Street Art Exhibition, the first of many organized group exhibitions of Abstract Expressionism in New York City. He also painted numerous strange hermetic insignia's. The X, a sign of negation, frequently decomposed into two elbows that often didn't align properly. Much of the late work was painted on rag or mold made paper, often with acrylic or gouache. his work is represented in many American and international collections.
