Düsseldorf), Vorzeichnung zum ersten Blatt der Folge "Auch ein Todtentanz". Bleistift auf Papier. Nicht sign. und dat. (1848). 30,5 x 37,8 cm. - Punktuell oben auf Träger montiert. - Die Vorzeichnung für den Holzschnitt zeigt den aus den Tiefen emporsteigenden Tod, der von fünf allegorischen Frauengestalten empfangen wird: Eitelkeit, Blutgier, List, Tollheit und Lüge. Ein Krähenfuß, der jeweils unter ihrem Gewand hervorblitzt, offenbart den üblen Charakter der oft schönen Gestalten. In Kurrentschrift sind die Verse ober- und unterhalb der Illustration eingetragen. Rethel schafft den Zyklus in einem Jahr der Revolutionen, die Europa erschüttern und an der bis dato herrschenden Ordnung rütteln. - Auch 180 Jahre nach Entstehung der Zeichnung und des Zyklus hat dieser nichts von seiner Gültigkeit eingebüßt, sondern ist aktueller denn je.

Bleistift, teils weiß gehöht, ein Blatt laviert auf chamoisfarbenem Whatman-Velin oder graubraunem Velin. In Orig. HLdr.-Einband. Ca. 26 x 20,5 cm. Teils datiert "Schloß Linn July 30" und mit eigenh. Ortsangaben. (1830). Wz. „J WHATMAN TURKEY MILL 1825“. Bei dem Skizzenbuch dürfte es sich um das erste Reiseskizzenbuch handeln, dass der junge Alfred Rethel noch während seiner Studienzeit an der Düsseldorfer Akademie anfertigte. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt zählte Rethel erst vierzehn Jahre. Trotzdem wird die Faszination des Künstlers für die Architektur des Mittelalters in diesem Skizzenbuch bereits sehr deutlich, wie etwa die Studie des von Efeu überwachsenen Fensters des Klosters Linn bei Krefeld eindrücklich zeigt. Unten mittig eigenh. bezeichnet "David", sowie rechts monogrammiert (ligiert) und datiert "18AR39", verso auf dem Karton (wohl) eigenhändig mit Bleistift betitelt. Beigegeben zwei weitere Bleistiftzeichnungen Rethels aus dessen Nachlass: "Der Krankenbesuch" (Kat. C.G. Boerner 1968, Nr. 65) und "Der hl. Bonifatius, stehend nach rechts, mit erhobener Hand predigend" (Kat. C.G. Boerner 1968, Nr. 13) sowie eine Bleistiftzeichnung von oder nach Rethel "Die Beweinung Christi" (23,4 x 33,4 cm). – Beigegeben: - Provenienz: Aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers. C.G. Canossa 1077, Paderborn 2006, Band 2, S. 496: "Wie in seinem bekanntesten Werk, den Aachener Karlsfresken, stand die Darstellung mittelalterlicher Geschichte allgemein im Zentrum von Alfred Rethels Schaffen. Auf einem friesartig gestreckten Längsformat verbildlicht er in dieser Ölstudie die Begegnung Heinrichs IV. mit Gregor VII. in Canossa. Auf einer schmalen Bildbühne sind die Akteure in reliefhafter Staffelung vor einer südlichen Landschaft gegeben: in der linken Bildhälfte der Papst auf einem Schimmel reitend, begleitet von kirchlichen Würdenträgern, rechts der König mit seiner Familie samt Gefolge. Durch vielsagende Gesten und Blickkontakte stehen die Figuren untereinander in einem augenfälligen Beziehungsgeflecht. Im Sinne einer auf Öffentlichkeitswirksamkeit ausgerichteten nazarenischen Kunstauffassung waren einfache Lesbarkeit und schnelle Rezeption angestrebt. (...) Heinrich wird jedoch nicht im Büßergewand, sondern als König gezeigt, wodurch seine Würde eher gewahrt bleibt als in anderen Darstellungen des Canossa-Themas. Da Rethel generell darum bemüht war, den 'geschichtlichen Konflikt in seiner Gültigkeit für die Gegenwart' vorzuführen, könnte hier eine Stellungnahme zur Spannung zwischen katholischer Kirche und preußischem Staat in den Kölner Wirren zwischen 1836 und 1841 im Sinne eines Plädoyers für ein starkes Königtum unter Anerkennung des geistlichen Primats vermutet werden."
