      Oct. 27, 2023

      § Albert Reuss (Austrian 1889-1975) The Dress-maker's Mannequin, 1969

      Est: £700 - £900

§ Albert Reuss (Austrian 1889-1975) The Dress-maker's Mannequin, 1969 monogrammed and dated (lower left), oil on canvas (63.5cm x 76cm (25in x 30in)) Provenance Private Collection, UK. Out of Context and Out of Time: Works by Albert Reuss Albert Reuss’s work often evoked connections with Surrealism and in particular the work of Salvador Dalí and Giorgio de Chirico. Objects often inhabit and float in space: a dress-maker’s mannequin, three-legged chair or an isolated tree irregularly sit in abandoned landscapes having lost connection to their normal environment, which was presumably partly a reflection of Reuss’s own displacement. Born in Vienna in 1889, Reuss gained success in his own country with his first one-man exhibition held at the Würthle Gallery in Vienna in 1926. The show sold well and brought him the security of a teaching post as well as election to the Künstlerbund Hagen in 1927; he continued to make a living from his art for the next decade in Austria. However, following the Anschluss in 1938 Reuss fled to Britain, leaving behind his reputation and never to return to his homeland. After periods in St Ives and Cheltenham, Reuss and his wife eventually moved to Mousehole in Cornwall in 1948. They largely kept a distance from the thriving artistic community in St Ives and he continued with his distinctive style which was gentle and calm but with a melancholic tone. The Kunsthandel Widder Gallery provided a fitting description of this post-war work: 'Objects, floating relinquished through space and having lost any foothold, predominate his imagery...Ripped out of their natural context, those objects tell the story of a voyage, of a kind of abandonment of an object that does not fit in its new environment. Reuss's artwork, style and choice of subject matter invoke an association with Surrealism. Dalí and Chirico are but the two most important artists…[who]…bring to mind Reuss's artwork. Reuss's depiction of people has a similarly estranged air about them as those of his objects. Taken out of context, of time, of place, the pictured people appear oddly strange. Melancholic and lonely, but also calm and gentle, Reuss's creations remind the viewer of the art of Josef Floch.' Reuss’s work is held in numerous significant galleries, notably the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the Belvedere Gallery and Albertina in Vienna and the Newlyn Art Gallery in Penzance. He held regular one-man shows during his lifetime at the O’Hana Gallery in London from 1953, as well as receiving solo exhibitions in Birmingham and Cheltenham, amongst others.

By the 1920s at the latest, it had established itself as "today's most radical group" within Viennese artists' associations. In the 1910s, the Hagenbund achieved significant status as a platform for young, contemporary art through presentations at the Kunstschau Wien. In the 1920s in particular, the Hagenbund experienced its heyday and took the step towards radical modernity. The special exhibition Painting and Sculpture in 1911 with works by Oskar Kokoschka, Anton Faistauer, Anton Kolig and Albert Paris Gütersloh and numerous works by Egon Schieles received particular attention. Although there was no unified style or artistic manifesto, manifestations of New Objectivity and post-expressionist tendencies with cubist elements are characteristic. The Hagenbund had an extremely eventful history during its almost four decades of existence, from the monarchy to the Nazi takeover of power in September 1938, which led to the dissolution of the artists' association. The latter prompted this due to overly modern and liberal artistic views, the high number of artists* with Jewish roots and a left wing among the members. Many members like Georg and Bettina Ehrlich-Bauer, Josef Floch, Carry Hauser, Lilly Steiner, Otto Rudolf Schatz or Felix Albrecht Harta had to emigrate or were murdered in a concentration camp, like Robert Kohl or Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg. Other Hagenbund members were Franz Lerch, Georg Ehrlich, Robert Philippi, Oskar Laske, Richard Lux, Karl Josef Gunsam, Heribert Potuznik, Georg Mayer-Marton, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Paul Ress Max Suppantschitsch, Rudolf Pointner and Ferdinand Stransk. Colorfulness, mysteriousness and the static, frontal posture of the female torso comparable to works by Paul Delvaux. Composition and mood, calm, melancholy and contemplation comparable similar in the works of Josef Floch. Albert Reuss, son of a Jewish butcher (named Reiss) in Budapest, went to Vienna against his father's wishes at the age of 18 to become an artist. He studied the works of the great masters in the Viennese museums, but remained self-taught. His style in those years was expressive, with an impasto application of paint and a lively color palette. In 1930 a patron made it possible for him to spend a year on the French Riviera. The landscapes, still lifes and figure paintings created there were exhibited in 1931 in the Würthle Gallery in Vienna, where Reuss had already shown a collective exhibition in 1926, at that time under the patronage of the Society for the Promotion of Modern Art. In 1932 the artist became a member of the Hagenbund, but emigrated to England in 1938 because of increasing pressure from the Nazi regime. There he exhibited in provincial galleries with little success and, due to the indifference of the gallery owners and the public, retreated to the countryside in Cornwall, where he continued to work intensively on his paintings. His pictures became increasingly heavy in content and revealed his mental state at this time. He himself called the fruits of his labor "images of loneliness". In 1975 these works were shown at the BAWAG Foundation in Vienna.

Oil on canvas England, 1928 Albert Reuss (1899-1976) - Austrian painter Signed with monogram and dated lower left 'AR. 1928' Verso additionally signed with monogram 'AR.' Old gallery label on the verso side of the stretcher Dimensions: 46 x 38 cm Impressive early work of the self-taught artist Albert Reuss who had developed an excellent technical finesse and artistic variety Albert Reuss artistic output was always deeply influenced by his biography. In the 1920s, he began to deal with painting and experimented with different artistic styles he had discovered in museums and art exhibitions. His early works therefore reveal influences of Expressionism, since he preferred impasto and vibrant colors. The present boy's portrait is a beautiful example of his first years of artistic activity and shows the half-length figure of a blonde boy with straight look and elegant tie. Reuss clearly focused on the depiction of his sitter's face which he literally modelled with paint and brushes. The painting is signed with monogram and dated lower left 'AR. 1928'. The canvas verso additionally reveals the artist's monogram 'AR.'. The stretcher is fitted with an old gallery label 'THE ORION GALLERY [...] Penz Ance'. The paint surface is clearly affected by craquelure and shows some areas, where the paint appears slightly detached from the canvas. There are two tiny losses of paint on the left cheek of the boy. The size of the stretcher is 46 x 38 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 52.5 x 44.5 cm. Albert Reuss (1899-1976) Reuss was born in Vienna. He became a self-taught artist, inspired by the works of great masters he had seen in museum exhibitions. In 1930, he was supported by a patron to spend a year on the French Riviera, which was followed by his first solo exhibition at the renowned gallery Würthle in Vienna in 1931. Reuss became a member of the artist's association 'Hagenbund' in 1932 and had his first exhibition in Chicago in the following year. The political circumstances required his emigration to England in 1938, where he became a permanent resident in Mousehole, Cornwall, since 1948. His mature works are characterized by surrealist tendencies. His mental situation influenced however his later artistic output which the artist described as 'works of loneliness'. In recent years, the artist has moved back into the awareness due to the interest in the emigrated 'lost generation'. Today, his works are included in a number of public art collections, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Tel Aviv Museum in Israel, the Albertina in Vienna and the Museum of Art in Ohio.
