    • JOAN REIXACH (Documented in Valencia between 1431 and 1486) "Virgin in Majesty"
      Jul. 22, 2024

JOAN REIXACH (Documented in Valencia between 1431 and 1486) "Virgin in Majesty"

      Est: €7,500 - €10,000

Tempera and gold leaf on panel. Despite its obvious damage, this interesting 15th century panel can be attributed to the painter Joan Reixach, one of the main promoters of the Hispano-Flamenco style in the Kingdom of Valencia. Central panel of an important dismounted altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin, the painter shows the titular image as in his other works: enthroned and holding the Child Jesus in her lap with her right hand, while with her left she blesses and carries a goldfinch. Surrounded by a large celestial court, two angels kneel at her feet offering her two vases with flowers. Her strong Eyckian imprint is evident in some details of the work such as the rich textile decoration and the sumptuousness of the decorations with gems and pearls. Measurements: 151.5 x 91 cm.

    • JOAN REIXACH (Documented in Valencia between 1431 and 1486) "Saint Mary Magdalene"
      Nov. 07, 2023

JOAN REIXACH (Documented in Valencia between 1431 and 1486) "Saint Mary Magdalene"

      Est: €135,000 - €180,000

Tempera and gold on panel. Provenance: - Vienna, private collection. Reference bibliography: - Company, X., La Pintura del Renaixement, Valencia, Institució Alfons el Magnànim, 1987; VV.AA., The FLEMISH key in the primitive Valencians, cat. exp., Valencia, Museum of Fine Arts, 2001; Velasco, A., Masterpieces from the gothic to the renaissance (1350-1550), Bernat Gallery, Barcelona, 2020, early 58-63, cat. 6. The style of this beautiful panel refers directly to that of the painter Joan Reixach, one of the main promoters of the Hispano-FLEMISH style in the Kingdom of Valencia. Reixach shows the figure of the Magdalene in full body, in front of a landscape with a strong Eyckian imprint with hills, groves, vegetation and a Flemish-style walled city with towers, spiers, rivers, reminiscent of those that appear in the compositions of the great master. Flemish. The artist shows the saint with a meditative gesture, perhaps alluding to the fact that he reflects on her dissolute past, while she counts the pearls of a long necklace and holds in her left hand her iconographic attribute par excellence: the perfume jar. . Her gaze directed to the ground and the fact that she is barefoot are signs of humility; as well as the particularity that she wears a brown camel skin tunic, which alludes to the hermitism that the saint practiced. However, the FLEMISH influence in Reixach, tending toward luxury and sumptuousness, shows a beautiful and elegant female figure, with delicate features and wearing a large red cloak that closes at chest level with a rich brooch of precious stones and pearls. Reixach's hand can also be seen in the type of folding of the cloak and in the delicate physiognomic features of the saint's face, analogous to those of Saint Michael in the Galleria Parmeggiani in Reggio Emilia, Saint Margaret in the National Museum of Art in Catalonia and, especially, the Virgin who presides over the triptych of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt amb Main. Although we do not know its remote origin, its measurements suggest that this painting was the main panel of an altarpiece dedicated to Mary Magdalene; a saint who enjoyed great veneration in the ancient Kingdom of Valencia. Curiously, it is known that Joan Reixach hired the main altarpiece from the Valencian monastery of Dominican nuns of La Magdalena in 1486, although nothing is known about its whereabouts; except that it must have been dismantled around the year 1658, at which time it was replaced by a new baroque style altarpiece. Measurements: 129 x 53.5 cm.

      Est: €120,000 - €240,000

74 x 65 cm. (open). Tempera and gold on panel. On the back, label of the Delegate Board for the Seizure, Protection and Salvage of Artistic Treasures with Inventory No.: 10113; Provenance: Oliva and Collection No.: 29. Provenance: - Count of Oliva. Documented in 1937 when it was seized by the Junta Delegada at his home in Calle Hortaleza 61, Madrid, together with the challenges of his artistic assets. - Acquired by the present owner in 1969 from an antique dealer in Madrid as a work by Jacomart. - Private Spanish collection. Bibliography and exhibitions: - Gómez Frechina, J., "La clave flamenca en los primitivos valencianos", exhibition catalogue, pp. 216-221, fig. 29.6. This important triptych, divided into two compartments, shows in its central part the Virgin and Child enthroned between Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anthony the Abbot and is surmounted by a Calvary. The side doors that protect it depict Saint Bartholomew and Saint Jerome and, above them, the Archangel Saint Gabriel and the Virgin of the Annunciation. Assigned to Reixach's production since 2001, this work is closely related in style to the Triptych of the Virgin and Child in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main. Although the latter dates from a more advanced period in his oeuvre, the formal relationship with the Enthroned Virgin and Child and the Saint Jerome is evident. On the other hand, the model of the crucified Christ on Calvary is a constant in his works, as is the type of panoramic landscape with cities, roads, bridges and small figures. The scarcity of his works and the uniqueness of the painting make this piece of special interest for collectors and within the production of Joan Reixach, one of the main promoters of the Hispano-Flemish style in the Kingdom of Valencia.

Joan Reixach was one of the main promoters of the Hispano-Flemish style in the Kingdom of Valencia. The strong Eyckian imprint can be seen in some of the details of these paintings, such as the armour of Saint Michael, with his stripes adorned with gems and pearls, and also in the conception of the background landscapes with hills, groves, vegetation and the walled city in Flemish style with towers, spires, rivers, boats and bridges reminiscent of those that appear in compositions by the great Flemish master. The four saints were taken from a dismantled altarpiece, perhaps from a bench, and are presented on an independent support and grouped in pairs in two frames made of Gothic-inspired carved and gilded wood. However, we know from old photographs that have survived of these same works that each pair of saints originally shared the same support, the original arrangement of Saint Michael and Saint Lucy having been altered. .
