    AN AMERICAN SILVER TWO-HANDLED TRAY, STEPHEN RICHARD, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1820

    weight 130 oz 10dwt measurements length over handles 29 3/4in. (75.5cm) oval with bold gadrooned border, matching riveted hoop handles, the back neatly engraved "S. Richard fecit 131oz - 12dwt" NOTE G. & S. Richard advertised the opening of a store at 160 Broadway in May, 1801, "where they intend to import and manufacture all sorts of Jewellry, after the French and American style, and in the most fashionable taste" (Deborah Waters, Elegant Plate, p. 379). By 1813 Stephen Richard had moved to 12 Maiden Lane. A tea urn by S. Richard, with a similar engraved signature rather than a stamped mark, was sold Sotheby's, New York, January 20, 2006, lot 168.
