Richmond R.A.’ bears label with transcription of original inscriptions to painting's case oil on panel 25 x 28.5 cm. (9 7/8 x 11 1/4 in.) Provenance Given by the artist to Dr. John William Ogle (1824 - 1905) in 1882; Anonymous sale, Bonham's, Chester, 05.03.2013, Lot 395; Private collection, Southwest England This subject, copied from Raphael's similarly-sized composition (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) was apparently given by the artist to his friend, Dr. John Ogle, in 1882. This information was incised upon a wooden box that once contained this picture (a presentation method which Richmond used on several occasions, with one example recently with John Robertson Fine Art), now lost, but recorded upon a modern handwritten label to the reverse. Presumably Richmond had access to the original when it was in the esteemed picture collection of `the richest heiress in England`, Angela Georgina Burdett, later Baroness Burdett Coutts (1817-1906). Richmond also painted his own version of this subject, with that painting now in the Yale Centre for British Art. George Richmond, RA,  British 1809-1896-  Portrait of William Legge, 4th Earl of Dartmouth, bust-length, wearing a white shirt and black stock;  black, white, and coloured chalk heightened with touches of white on paper, signed and dated 'Geo. Richmond delit 1846' (lower left), 55 x 42.8 cm.  Note:  The present work is a preparatory sketch for an oil portrait of William Legge (1784-1853) by Richmond, which was and presumably is still housed in the Collection of the Earl of Dartmouth. A record of the portrait can also be found in the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art [negative number 86/0457] (https://photoarchive.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk/objects/433141/william-legge-4th-earl-of-dartmouth?ctx=e2dca6938e2cdd9bcff49a6f09f100e867927932&idx=0). Richmond was a member of 'The Ancients', a group which was inspired by the work of William Blake (1757-1827). He worked largely as a portraitist, producing likenesses of many of the most prominent figures of the 19th century, including Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855), Michael Faraday (1791-1867), George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878), and Queen Adelaide (1791-1849).

Circle of John Hamilton Mortimer,  British 1741-1779-  Studies of figures in Classical dress;  pen and brown ink on paper, bears possible initials 'HM [?]' (lower centre), 30.4 x 47 cm.; together with Circle of George Richmond, RA, British 1809-1896- Figure studies; pen and black ink on paper, 29.5 x 31.5 cm., two (2). (unframed / mounted).  Note:  The first drawing is heavily reminiscent of Mortimer's sketches, often featuring figures with sharp, clearly defined profiles, and dressed in Classical costume - see for example his drawing in the British Museum [no.1861,0413.3].  The second work exhibits striking similarities to certain drawings by Richmond which reveal the artist's exploration of the depiction of the movement of the human figure.

George Richmond, RA,  British 1809-1896-  Portrait of Hugh Seymour Tremenheere;  black, white and red chalk on canvas, 44 x 35.5 cm.  Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note:  George Richmond studied first with his father, the miniaturist Thomas Richmond, Sen. (1771-1831), and later at the Royal Academy Schools. At the RA, Richmond befriended Samuel Palmer (1805-1881), together with whom he became a member of The Ancients, a group of painters who worked in the style of William Blake (1757-1827). While Richmond did paint a number of literary and religious scenes in Blake’s vein, he later established a successful career as a portrait painter and it is for his distinctive, intimate portraits, often rendered in pencil or in chalk, like the present example, that he is best known.  Tremenheere (1804-1893) was a prominent barrister, who served as inspector of schools and mines, and carried out inquiries into factories and agriculture.

A Sleeping Wayfarer, 1830, watercolour heightened with white and body colour over pencil, with pen and brown-black ink on grey paper, depicting a robed male figure seated on the ground and leaning on a rock beside trees, monogrammed lower left and dated lower right in sepia ink, sheet size 13.2 x 11.4 cm (5 1/4 x 4 1/2 ins), window-mounted into thick archival cream paper, board mount with wash border, framed and glazed (35 x 31.5 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: George Richmond; Canon T.K. Richmond; R.T. Richmond; Mrs Miriam Hartley; Sotheby's, 24 March 1977, lot 35; P. & D. Colnaghi and Co. Ltd; the present owner. Literature: Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Samuel Palmer and ‘The Ancients’, selected and catalogued by Raymond Lister, 9 October -16 December 1984, catalogue number 105. A rare work from the early period of George Richmond's career, executed just before the artist's elopement with Julia Tatham forced him to turn to the more mundane, but lucrative, occupation of portraiture. As a portrait artist Richmond was highly successful, counting some of the most notable names of the time amongst his sitters. As a young man, however, his work had been unconventional and ahead of its time. Richmond was taught by his artist father, before enrolling at the Royal Academy at the age of 15. It was here that he became a lifelong friend of Samuel Palmer, as well as forming close associations with Edward Calvert, Thomas Sidney Cooper, and Frederick Tatham (brother of Julia), amongst others. At the age of 16 Richmond was introduced to William Blake. Their meeting had a profound effect on the young artist, and he became an ardent admirer and follower of Blake. In around 1824 Richmond, along with Palmer, Calvert, Tatham, and others, formed the Blake-influenced group known as 'The Ancients'. The group was the first English manifestation of the formalised artistic 'brotherhood', pre-dating the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood by more than two decades. 'The Ancients' espoused many of the ideals which the PRB would come to uphold, such as distancing themselves from the academic art establishment, pursuing equality and lauding communal living, nostalgia for an idealised rural past, and eschewment of mundane subject matter in favour of the elevated and spiritual. They also promoted the wearing of special revivalist costume, although in practise only Samuel Palmer seems to have worn it often. Furthermore, the similarity between the pictured wayfarer and two portraits of Samuel Palmer in the National Gallery (NPG 2154 and NPG 2223) provokes speculation that he was perhaps the sitter for this work.

George Richmond, RA (British, 1809-1896) Portrait of Sir John Gurney (1768-1845) seated in his study watercolour on paper 69.5 x 47.5cm Provenance: By descent from the sitter's daughter Harriet (1800-?) to the present owner Footnote: The artist's Account Book lists a painting of Sir John Gurney on p. 6 under 1844, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1845 and engraved by J Posselwhite. It also records two copies on pp. 38, 40 under 1845. Sir John Gurney was a judge and barrister. He was called to the bar in 1793 and famously defended Robert Thomas Crossfield for complicity in the Popgun Plot, the 1794 conspiracy by three members of the London Corresponding Society to assassinate King George III by means of a poison dart fired from an airgun. He later prosecuted Lord Cochrane for spreading rumours of Napoleon's death to make money on the stock exchange. As a result of this case and his prosecution of the Cato Street conspirators in 1820, he was knighted and made a Baron of the Exchequer in 1832.

He went with his wife and surviving son along with fellow painter Samuel Palmer and his wife, the daughter of artist John Linnell. The trip proved enormously successful resulting in some of Richmond's best work, establishing him as the pre-eminent portrait painter of the day.
