ALADÁR RICHTER (1898-1950). MEGNYILT HIRDETÖ. 1933. 49½x37¼ inches, 125¾x94½ cm. Pogány Zsigmond, Budapest.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

ALADÁR RICHTER (1898-1950) MEGNYILT HIRDETÖ. 1933. 49½x37¼ inches, 125¾x94½ cm. Pogány Zsigmond, Budapest. Condition B+ / B: repaired tears at edges, some into text and image; small replaced loss at upper left edge; minor creases and abrasions in image. Framed. Richter was a Hungarian artist and a prominent graphic designer with a legacy of strong, Art Deco images. He was also an architect and interior designer, and all three of his artistic skills come to the forefront on this poster for the opening of a new advertising company in Budapest. Richter presents a stylized Mercury pointing to the company's striking storefront, perhaps designed by the artist as well. Crouse p. 104.

    Megnyílt Hirdetö. 1933.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: ALADÁR RICHTER (1898-?) SIZE: 37 3/8 x 49 3/4 in./95 x 126.3 cm PRINTER: Pogány Zsigmond, Budapest DESCRIPTION: “Mercury—the fleet-footed Roman god of trade and communication, whose name derives from a Latin root word that applies to merchandise and wages—gets a Cubist makeover in this Richter promotion announcing the opening of Budapest’s Vállalatának public relations firm. Modern art freely intermingles with the classical motif as the artist relies on strict geometry and stark color contrast to create a Mondrian-like centerpiece. Like Robert Louis’s Pierce-Arrow and Charles Loupot’s Mira, this is one of the few posters of the era to use silver paper. It relays a pointed message that clever public relations can be used to creatively call attention to any product. The resulting artwork is smart and sophisticated yet easily understood and stylish” (Crouse/Deco, p. 104). (Art Deco)

ARTIST: ALADAR RICHTER (1898-?) SIZE: 37 1/4 x 49 5/8 in./94.5 x 126 cm PRINTER: Piatnik, Budapest DESCRIPTION: "The Széchenyi thermal baths in Budapest, supplied by two hot springs, are the largest medicinal baths in Europe. The neo-Baroque structure that houses the spa... however, is relegated to the background in this Aladar Richter poster. It lies behind the peaked Art Deco waves of one of the 'three big pools' that create the 'bathing beach' portion of the baths—which, the poster promises, provides patrons of the spa with 'secluded sunbathing' opportunities" (Crouse/Deco, p. 286).
