(one signed) concerning a catalogue of Whistler's Nocturnes printed by the Ballantyne press loosely inserted, original cloth-backed boards, paper labels to upper cover and spine, spine label chipped, 1904 § Wordsworth (William) Poems..., one of 310 copies, wood-engraved illustrations by T.Sturge Moore, a few pencil markings, original white buckram, soiled, 1902 § Suckling (Sir John) The Poems, edited by John Gray, one of 310 copies, wood-engraved border and initials by Charles Ricketts, original patterned-paper boards, 1896, uncut, all a little rubbed, [Watry B46, B37 & B3], 8vo, printed at the Ballantyne Press [for the Vale Press] (3) ⁂ Charles Home McCall was the son of Charles McCall, the manager and printer of the Ballantyne Press and an important influence and guide to Charles Ricketts. Charles Home McCall joined his father at the press in 1893. At the end of the introduction to the bibliography Ricketts pays tribute to the McCalls: "My books would not have achieved that measure of technical success in 'build' and presswork had I not benefitted by the untiring energy and the intelligent sympathy of Mr. Charles McCall and of his son, C.Home McCall...". pp.xvii-xviii. Charles Home McCall's notes on the Whistler catalogue in the first mentioned list the various editions printed. Obviously the notes were originally placed inside a copy of the book: "This is the very rare first edition of the Catalogue..." which consisted of 250 copies but was destroyed "because Whistler was dissatisfied". An additional note in red ink by McCall's son Robin states that, "The Catalogue to which this refers was never found in C.H.Mc's papers...".

In 1914, he was commissioned to design a poster for Thomas Hardy's play, The Dynasts, an epic-drama based on the Napoleonic Wars. It was to be performed at the Kingsway Theatre, London and the poster was printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son Ltd. Ricketts' design depicts a large figure which is emblematic of war, wearing a headdress of thorns and holding Napoleon in his hand. One of the editions printed also mentioned the title, author and the theatre (a copy is the Victoria & Albert Museum, museum no. E.82-1915). The rare present work is one of fifty proofs also printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son Ltd, but the text has been deleted and in addition, is signed by both Thomas Hardy and Charles Ricketts.

Charles Ricketts RA (1866-1931) COSTUME DESIGN, FRANCISCAN MONK, FOR FERDINAND BUCHNER'S ELIZABETH OF ENGLAND, 1931 variously inscribed with wardrobe instructions watercolour and pencil on paper (unframed) 36 by 25cm., 14 by 10in> Charles Ricketts was a prominent member of the Irish Theatre scene in Dublin and one of the many influential figures involved in the establishment of the city's Abbey Theatre. A friend of the Yeats' Ricketts attended the many performances of William Butler Yeats,' including the debut of Where There is Nothing, in London 1904, as noted in lot 81. The design for this costume recalls the character of Paul Ruttledge in Yeats' Where There is Nothing. The protagonist, Ruttledge, is a landlord who joins a band of tinkers until illness forces him to enter a Franciscan monastery, where he disturbs the community with his high spirits and his apparitions. It is possible that costumes for this earlier play proved inspiring to the designer for this adaptation of Elizabeth's England. Although from the same owner, this lot was not part of Lady Gregory's collection>

(Vale Press) Ricketts, Charles [de Sousy] (1866-1931). A Defence of the Revival of Printing. Woodcut illustration and border, initial, and press-device, including full pictorial first page, by Ricketts. 7½x5, original light blue boards, paper spine and cover labels. [1 of 250 copies]. First Edition. London: The Ballantyne Press for Hacon & Ricketts [The Vale Press], 1899 Printed with Vale Fount of type designed by Ricketts. An important and controversial book of an on fine printing. In this work, Ricketts contrasts the work of the Kelmscott Press with the early Italian books of the Jenson influence, favoring the Italian school. Lovers of fine printing would do well to study the subtle differences in the Morris and rickets interpretations of the Jenson Roman, differences that might indicate the variations between mere painstaking craftsmanship and artistic good taste. Top inch of spine chipped (affecting label), spine panel loose with front joint split and tear across bottom inch, slight shelf wear and darkening; offsetting to endpapers, else good and worthy of repair.

VALE PRESS -- Charles RICKETTS (1866-1931). A bibliography of the books issued by Hacon & Ricketts. London: Ballantyne Press for C. Ricketts, sold by John Lane (New York), 1904. 4 o (210 x 140 mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM, one of ten copies. Printed in red and black in the Vale, Avon and King's founts. Wood-engraved frontispiece by Ricketts after the sign-board painted by C.H. Shannon of the old Vale premises, vine borders. Original flexible vellum binding, gilt bands and lettering on spine. Cloth folding box. Provenance: Albert Sperison (1908-99, San Francisco printer), Vale Press Collection bookplate. This final publication from the Vale Press was limited to 250 paper copies and 10 COPIES ON VELLUM. In order to prevent the three founts from drifting "into other hands than their designers' and become stale by unthinking use", it was decided to throw the punches and matrices in the Thames and melt the type into metal again. Charles Ricketts was one of the most versatile English designers of books in all their aspects (type, illustration, binding, etc.), as well as an influential writer and publisher.
