b. 1902 - d. 1995

Lucie Rie was an Austrian artist, born in Vienna in 1902, who immigrated to Britain in 1938. Rie was an influential and internationally famous creator of ceramic art during the 20th century. Rie learned from Michael Powlony during her studies in Vienna at the Kunstgewerbeschule. Before arriving in London, Lucie Rie was already an award-winning artist in Europe.

During and after World War II, she opened a ceramics and pottery and button-making business and workshop in London that employed many refugees. Rie taught at Camberwell School of Art for a few years, during which she was given an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in 1969. You can find her ceramic art for sale internationally, as she kept creating until her health declined in 1990. For a similar example, see 'Lucie Rie' by Tony Birks (Stenlake Publishing, revised edition, 1999), p. 115. Geoffrey Swindell writes: 'I was a 19 year old student touring Cornwall in 1964 when I found this milk jug in St Ives. Although I was a painting student, I had an interest in pottery because I had taken a part-time job in a handcraft pottery at Alton Towers. I bought the jug for £2.10 shillings. It was quite unlike any other pottery I had seen before. I was amazed at the innovative and unique approach to designing and making functional pottery. When I got back to my home and college of art in Stoke-on-Trent, I transferred my interest from the painting course to the pottery course and my lifelong obsession with making ceramics began. The jug has been a prized possession of mine ever since. At 80, like most old people, I feel the need to pass on the pleasure of owning this beautiful item to someone else.'

LUCIE RIE & HANS COPER STONEWARE POTTERY VESSEL

Lucie Rie & Hans Coper Stoneware Pottery Vessel. Impressed 'LR' & 'HC' to the underside. Lucie Rie (1902–1995) and Hans Coper (1920–1981) were pioneering ceramicists who significantly influenced 20th-century studio pottery. Rie, an Austrian-born modernist, was known for her refined forms and innovative glazes. After fleeing Nazi Austria, she settled in London, where she worked alongside Coper, a German-Jewish refugee. Despite no formal training, Coper developed a unique, sculptural style, creating abstract, bold vessels. While their styles differed, Rie's being more elegant and functional, Coper's more experimental, they shared a close working relationship and left a lasting impact on contemporary ceramics. Their works are held in major collections worldwide. Keywords: China, Porcelain, Pottery; Ref: BD1043
