He originally aspired to work as a priest, but broke off his theology studies and initially worked in the financial service. In his mid-thirties he began painting landscapes and joined the Hagenbund in 1938. His landscapes primarily depict views of Vienna and the surrounding area. Although he had no academic training and was self-taught, he was recognized as an artist by critics and colleagues and exhibited in art salons, especially in Vienna. signed lower left,framed. August Rieger (* 1886 Vienna; 1941 Vienna) was an Austrian self-taught landscape painter. Born the son of a carpenter, originally destined by his parents to become a priest, Rieger entered a Catholic seminary, but left theological studies prematurely and entered the financial service. It was not until the 1920s that he began painting landscapes as an autodidact. He presented his works with views of Vienna and provinces in art salons of his hometown. Despite his lack of academic training, he was recognised by critics as a professional artist. In 1938 he became a member of the Hagenbund. The Impressionist painter is repeatedly compared with Carl Moll. He is characterised by a soft brushstroke that skilfully sets the light. Works can be found in the collection of the Belvedere, among others.
