    Park landscape

    Est: €4,000 - €4,400

signed lower left, framed. August Rieger (* 1886 Vienna; 1941 Vienna) was an Austrian self-taught landscape painter. Born the son of a carpenter, originally destined by his parents to become a priest, Rieger entered a Catholic seminary, but left theological studies prematurely and entered the financial service. It was not until the 1920s that he began painting landscapes as an autodidact. He presented his works with views of Vienna and provinces in art salons of his hometown. Despite his lack of academic training, he was recognised by critics as a professional artist. In 1938 he became a member of the Hagenbund. The Impressionist painter is repeatedly compared with Carl Moll. He is characterised by a soft brushstroke that skilfully sets the light. Works can be found in the collection of the Belvedere, among others.

Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left 24,8 x 24,4 in framed This oil painting by Rieger shows a bourgeois interior with a view from the workspace into the salon. Rieger is considered as an impressionist painting portrayal of the Viennese suburbs. In his broad painting style, which is characterized by soft and flowing brushstrokes and velvety tones, he is reminiscent of Carl Moll. The interior is bathed in a sunny light and fascinates by the blaze of color and the immediacy that is generated.

    May. 19, 2015

August Rieger (1886-1941), Landscape, Painting, 1935

    Est: €1,920 - €2,400

Oil on cardboard Austria, 1935 August Rieger (1886-1941) – Austrian landscape painter Signed and dated lower left ‘August Rieger 1935’ Dimensions: 39 x 35,5 cm Silver colored wooden frame: 45 x 41 cm Good condition Skillfully captured landscape by the Austrian artist August Rieger; similar paintings by the artist fetch up to €9,600 at international auctions Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. Confidently and skillfully and in liquid brush strokes the Austrian painter captured a landscape with a little body of water. Green, brown and yellow determine in different shades the coloring of the composition. Accents are added by white, the subdued blue of the sky and the pink-purple tone of the house half concealed by mighty trees. In almost sketchy freshness a harmonic landscape, the main theme in Rieger’s oeuvre, is created. Condition: The painting is varnished and overall in good condition. The frame shows significant signs of wear. The painting measures 39 x 35.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 45 x 41 cm. August Rieger (18856-1941) August Rieger, born in Vienna was a self-taught painter and worked as a financial officer. In the 1920s he turned to painting and began exhibiting his work in Viennese art associations such as the Kunstgemeinschaft or the Österreichischer Künstlerbund. In 1937 he was awarded the Prize of the City of Vienna, in 1938 he joined the Hagenbund. Rieger’s issues are the rural and the original of the landscape outside his hometown as the Danube floodplains and the Vienna Woods. He captured it in running often subtle brush strokes and bath it in a bright impressionistic lighting. Rieger's works are in the collections of major Austrian museums and in many private collections at home and abroad. (fea) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
