Distinguished Portrait of King Louis XIV - ATTRIBUTED TO GASPARD RIGAUD (Perpignan, 1661 - Paris, 1705) French school of the 18th century

Oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm. Description: Interesting portrait of the Sun King Louis XIV (1638-1715). It has the characteristic oval format in which the painter formulates a type of composition inspired by the Venetian portraits of the Cinquecento. The character is shown in profile, although he turns his head slightly to the left to look at us from the front. In this way, the painter can take pleasure in showing us his skill in describing the textures of the crimson velvet of the large cloak that covers the bust and chest of the portrayed person, which seem to come out of the frame of the painting itself, like a trompe l'oeil. Likewise, the painter has also focused part of his attention on the deeply realistic description of the face of the person portrayed. We do not know the identity of the person depicted, who could well have been an important figure in the Court of Versailles, which would explain the closeness of this painting to the ways and manners of Rigaud. The impeccable treatment of the pictorial surfaces, the precision of the drawing and the strong realism that he gives to the face, perfectly fit the style of this painter of Catalan origin. This is an excellent portrait that bears great similarities to the Portrait of the Marquis of Goussanville (Private collection, Paris, France) made by the French master.
