        JOSÉ RISUEÑO (GRANADA, 1665 - 1732)

        Est: €15,000 - €20,000

The image shows us the Child seated, in an attitude of giving blessing. It retains its original polychromy, which resembles porcelain. The original accessories that accompany the sculpture are exquisite, the richly embroidered silk robes, as well as the beautiful little silver shoes and the silver potencies. The Child sits on two silk cushions and on a magnificent throne of Glory, made of carved, gilded and polychromed wood, which is in itself a work of art. Decorative Arts.

JOSE RISUEÑO Granada (1665) / (1732) "Saint John"

        Est: €7,500 - €10,000

Carved and polychrome wood. Jose Risueño trained in the workshop of Diego de Mora, and in his sculptural works the influence of Alonso Cano is perceived, due to his careful polychromy, and Pedro de Mena, in his contained emotion, but advancing in greater exteriorization. of feelings. One of the most representative images of his production is that of Saint John the Baptist as a child, presented next to the lamb, of which there are a good number of specimens attributed to the sculptor and his workshop. A good example of its extraordinary plastic quality is the beautiful and delicate work presented here, representing Saint Juanito, which brings together all the sweetness of the best Granada school of sculpture. Its dimensions clearly indicate that it is a piece conceived for private devotion, a fact that has allowed better conservation of its original polychrome. The model follows the characteristics of the works that, with the same theme, were made by Risueño and his workshop, presenting an enormous formal parallelism in the position that the figure adopts with the specimen kept by the Monastery of Santa Paula in Seville, although , in this work, appears modestly covered with camel skin. Another similar example, although devoid of iconographic attributes, is preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In them, compositionally, the movement that the sculpture presents with the body of Saint John in complete torsion stands out. His torso and arms adopt a turned position that shows the intention of hugging or picking up the lamb, while his head turns to the opposite side, directing his gaze to the ground. What stands out in all of them is the quality of their incarnations, with their folds and excellent polychrome, and the contour presented by the figure, common in Risueño, in which one of the saint's legs appears in a position to ascLate a rock sculpted in the base. Measurements: 26.5 cm. (32 cm. with crown)

Oil on canvas representing Saint Domingo de Guzmán receiving the Virgin with the Child God. Measurements: 62 x 52 cm, framed measurements: 72 x 60 cm. One of the most prominent Spanish painters and sculptors of the Granada Baroque. Trained in the workshop of his father Manuel Risueño with the sculptors Diego and José de Mora and with the painter Juan de Sevilla, all of them disciples of Alonso Cano. With abundant artistic production of a religious nature, in his work we can see the influence of Cano's models, his taste for naturalism and the use of Van Dyck's Flemish prints. Among his paintings, the religious scenes stand out with examples such as The Coronation of Saint Rosalía and The Mystical Betrothal of Saint Catherine (Granada Cathedral), The Virgin of the Rosary (private collection, Almería) and Saint Thomas of Aquinas (acquired in 1911 by the Prado Museum). He collaborated with Palomino in the execution of The Triumph of the Eucharist and Saint Bruno from the dome of the Tabernacle of the Granada Charterhouse (in situ). He also made portraits, highlighting among them that of his protector, Archbishop Dr. Martín Azcargorta (archiepiscopal palace, Granada). In his sculptural works he cultivated the same themes as in painting, using diverse materials: clay, wood and stone, to make altarpieces, doorways and church facades, most of them in his hometown. Provenance: private collection, Barcelona. JOSÉ RISUEÑO (Granada, 1665 - 1732). “Sleeping child.” Polychrome clay and stuccoed fabric.

        Est: €25,000 - €35,000

JOSÉ RISUEÑO (Granada, 1665 - 1732). "Sleeping child". Polychrome earthenware and stuccoed canvas. Measurements: 6 x 22 x 12 cm. Devotional image carved in wood and polychrome, representing the naked Baby Jesus, sleeping with his head resting on a cushion and a light-coloured blanket under his body. It is a work of great naturalism, typically Baroque, characterised by a realism derived from a careful study of life. It is no longer a muscular child in the manner of Michelangelo, but the sculptor depicts an authentically infantile anatomy, which seeks to deceive the eye, to confuse reality with art in order to touch the soul of the faithful. Aesthetically, the piece is close to the work of the painter and sculptor from Granada, son of the artist Manuel Risueño, José began his training in his father's workshop with the sculptors Diego and José de Mora and the painter Juan de Sevilla, all of them disciples of Alonso Cano, head and initiator of the Granada school of the Baroque. Throughout his life Risueño produced an abundant artistic output of religious themes, characterised by the combination of the influence of Cano's models with a taste for naturalism and the use of Flemish prints by Van Dyck to construct his compositions. He enjoyed great success during his lifetime and was in fact protected by prominent members of the Church and worked in the factory of Granada cathedral, which guaranteed him a flow of commissions. From 1693 onwards, his main patron was Archbishop Martín Azcargorta, and it was precisely from that time onwards that the artist reached the maturity of his language and mastery. He produced important works such as the Christ of the convent of San Ángel and the Inmaculada del altar of the cathedral of Granada, although his most famous work, and also his last, was the series of sixteen figures that make up the main altarpiece of San Ildefonso. José Risueño's sculpture is characterised by small figures, Rococo-influenced technical virtuosity and the quality of his polychromes, given that he was also a painter. It should be noted that he worked not only in wood carving but also in stone and terracotta, producing altarpieces, doorways and church façades, most of them in his native Granada. As a painter he produced important religious works such as "La coronación de Santa Rosalía" and "Los desposorios místicos de Santa Catalina", in the cathedral of Granada, and he collaborated with Palomino in the execution of "El triunfo de la Eucaristía y San Bruno" in the dome of the Sagrario in the Carthusian monastery in Granada. He also painted portraits such as that of his protector Azcargorta (Archbishop's Palace, Granada). Works by José Risueño are currently held in the Prado Museum (work on deposit in the Provincial Museum of Lugo), the Museum of Fine Arts in Granada, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and other public and private collections.

JOSÉ RISUEÑO Granada (1665) / (1732) "Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John"

        Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Oil on canvas. José Risueño is one of the most important figures in baroque painting from Granada. Painter and sculptor, his production is concentrated in the city of Granada, where he cultivated a type of work in which the influence of Alonso Cano and the use of other sources such as flemish prints can be appreciated. In this splendid large-format work, he makes use of his habitual models in the representation of the Virgin and children's types, but it is evident that to make this composition he was inspired by Raphael's Little Holy Family, preserved in the Louvre Museum in Paris and that, without a doubt, he met through a print. From it he takes the distribution and position of the figures, the type of cradle, the stone wall at the back and the wide and colorful landscape in the background. Its dimensions allow us to guess that it was conceived as an altar canvas, like the ones he made for the cathedral of Granada. Measurements: 164 x 116 cm.

Deteriorated canvas in the center right. Important composition where the strong Flemish influence prevailing in Andalusian painting of the 17th century can be appreciated. The earthy tones of this canvas are characteristic of the first stage of the painter. The Virgin appears on the left seated on a plinth with the Child in her arms, behind her Saint Joseph with the flowery wand. On his knees at the feet of the Virgin, King Melchor dressed in a rich mantle offers gold to the Child who looks at the Mother. In the background, Gaspar and Baltasar, accompanied by soldiers among whom some characteristic physiognomies of the painter can be recognized, contemplate the scene clearly resolved in a cross-shaped composition.

ANDALUSIAN SCHOOL FROM THE 18TH CENTURY. CIRCLE OF JOSÉ RISUEÑO (GRANADA, 1665-1721) DIVINE SHEPHERDESS.

        Est: €2,800 - €4,200

Andalusian school from the 18th century. Circle of José Risueño (Granada, 1665-1721) Divine shepherdess. Sculpture in carved, polychrome and gilded wood. 41 x 44.5 x 32.5 cm. With faults. The theme of the Divine Shepherdess is an invocation of the Virgin Mary, represented as a heavenly shepherd, which emerged in Seville at the beginning of the 18th century. According to the vision of Fray Isidoro of Seville, the Virgin appears sitting on a rock, wearing a veil and a straw hat, dressed with a blue hand and a red tunic, a clear allusion to the clothes of the immaculate, she wears a white shepherd's coat and a crook , motifs linked to the bucolic atmosphere of the scene. A group of sheep representing the believers surround her with her.

ATTRIBUTED TO JOSÉ RISUEÑO (Granada, 1665 - 1721) Sagrada Familia This Holy Family, of great humanity and charm, has traditionally been attributed to the Granada-born painter who was trained under the influence of Alonso Cano;in him the tastes of the teacher by the naturalism are appreciated, the rich intonations of color with preference by the reddish and intense bluish ones, the taste by the flamenco painting whose imprint is patent in compositions and types, and a tendency to the idealization of personages and attitudes The anatomy of the characters as well as the peculiar style of the still life in the foreground lead us to think of another possible authorship, in this case José de Cieza (Granada, 1656 - Madrid, 1692), also a painter from the Granada school of follower Risueño de the stela of Cano, that at the end of the century marches to Madrid obtaining of Carlos II the title of painter of the King, thus uniting to his baggage Granada the tendencies that introduce us already in the eighteenth-century taste that began to prevail in the capital. With an important period frame in carved and gilded wood. Oil on canvas 130 x 88 cm Antique painting and 19th C.
