Diego (1886) Rivera Sold at Auction Prices

Freskomaler, Portrait painter, Wall painter, Draft draughtsman, Lithographer, Sculptor, b. 1886 - d. 1957

Diego Rivera, artist and muralist, is considered one of the 20th century's most important painters. Revered in Mexico for both his art and his rambunctious personality, he was instrumental in revitalizing Mexican art and mural painting. His public murals helped create interest in the genre of public art in Mexico and the United States. A devoted Marxist, his work at times was controversial, most famously when Nelson Rockefeller had his RCA mural destroyed because Rivera refused to remove Vladimir Lenin's image.Diego Rivera pencil drawings and art depict the lives of workers, as well as self-portraits and studies of his wife, artist, Frida Kahlo.

As a muralist, artist Diego Rivera's most famous works aren't collectible. His paintings, however, have received much attention at auction and Diego Rivera's artwork prices can rise into the millions. Purchase figural prints online or auction and find your next family heirloom.

DIEGO RIVERA (Mexico, 1886- 1957). "Portrait of Elna Lubischz", 1918. Pencil on paper. Signed, dedicated and dated. Presents some roughness on the paper and restoration in the upper left area.

    Est: €8,000 - €9,000

DIEGO RIVERA (Mexico, 1886- 1957). "Portrait of Elna Lubischz", 1918. Pencil on paper. Signed, dedicated and dated. Presents some roughness on the paper and restoration in the upper left area. Measurements: 45 x 30 cm; 73,5 x 58 cm (frame). Female portrait, made in pencil in which the artist places the main character in the center of the composition. Showing interest in her face, since it is the portrait of the bust. Born in Huanajuato in 1886, Diego Rivera was from a Creole family but his maternal grandmother was Indian. From a young age he stood out for his attitudes with drawing, this made that with 10-11 years old he was already in the academy, he attended night classes. His father did not like it, he wanted him to be a military man but he wanted to be an artist. At the age of 12 he entered the San Carlos Academy in Mexico, where he received a traditional education at the end of the 19th century. Antonio Fabrés was one of his teachers, but he considers Jose María Velasco, a landscape painter, to be his master. In 1907, Rivera, encouraged by Dr. Atl and thanks to a scholarship given to him by the governor of Veracruz, in addition to obtaining money by selling his works in an exhibition promoted by Atl so that the students could sell their works, he left for Europe, arriving in Madrid, where he stayed for two years, 1907-1909. Recommended by Atl, he enters the workshop of the artist Eduardo Chicharro, portraitist and symbolist. During those years Rivera made many copies of works from the Prado Museum. He returns to Mexico in the spring of 1921. Vasconcelos hires him to paint murals. He returns alone, apparently because there was no money for more than a ticket, but it seems that the marriage was broken up. As a result of this trip, Rivera will never return to Paris. In addition, Rivera left another lover and a daughter in Paris. Rivera was appointed director of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. There he undertook a radical reform, turning the academy into a workshop, creating a rhythm of work that had much more to do with the Renaissance workshops, as the muralists did. Another thing is that the students themselves were self-managed, making it a right for the students to choose their teachers, the staff of the center and the method of work. There was strong opposition from conservative sectors such as teachers, artists and students, and he had to resign as director of the academy. In these years he was also expelled from the communist party. So from 1930 he began to look to North America where he already had a reputation. Rivera makes a first incursion in 1930 to North America, with a series of commissions. He is called again by the minister to finish with projects he had half finished and in 1932 he returns to America where he consolidates his artistic career.

DIEGO RIVERA (Mexico, 1886-1957) "Portrait of Tehuana", 1938 Watercolor and graphite on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Attached certificate issued by Doña Guadalupe Rivera, daughter of Diego Rivera.

    Est: €28,000 - €30,000

DIEGO RIVERA (Mexico, 1886-1957) "Portrait of Tehuana", 1938 Watercolor and graphite on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Attached certificate issued by Doña Guadalupe Rivera, daughter of Diego Rivera. Measurements: 36 x 26 cm; 60 x 51 cm (frame). This delicate portrait, executed in watercolor and graphite, embodies the essence of the Mexican identity that Diego Rivera celebrated throughout his career. In this work, the face of a young Tehuana girl emerges with strength and serenity, capturing not only the physical features, but also the soul and pride of the indigenous roots that Rivera considered fundamental to the construction of Mexico's cultural identity. The use of soft lines, warm palette, and focus on the details of the face demonstrate Rivera's mastery in capturing the humanity of his subjects. This drawing is a unique piece that encapsulates the vision of an artist who was not only a painter, but also a visual chronicler of deep Mexico. In addition, this drawing stands out for its excellent state of preservation and for being accompanied by Doña Guadalupe Rivera's certification, which guarantees its authenticity. This piece is not only a portrait, but also a tribute to the cultural mestizaje that defined the work of one of the most emblematic artists of the 20th century. Diego Rivera (1886-1957) is one of the most influential figures of modern art, not only in Mexico, but worldwide. Born in Guanajuato, Rivera demonstrated an early artistic talent that led him to study at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. In 1907, he began a tour of Europe, studying in Spain, absorbing the influence of the great classical and modernist masters, and actively participating in the artistic circles of Paris during the effervescence of Cubism. However, it was upon his return to Mexico in 1921 that he found his true artistic voice, becoming one of the leading exponents of Mexican muralism. Rivera's murals, charged with social and political messages, celebrate the struggle of the Mexican people and the pride of their indigenous roots. His work transcends genres and formats, being the author of colossal murals in iconic buildings such as the National Palace and the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, as well as monumental works in the United States, such as "Detroit Industry Murals" at the Detroit Institute of Arts and "Man at the Crossroads" at Rockefeller Center (although the latter was destroyed due to its political content). Rivera's work is part of the permanent collections of some of the most important museums in the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the National Museum of Art in Mexico. In addition, his legacy has been celebrated in retrospective exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Louvre Museum in Paris.
