          Est: £12,000 - £18,000

ATTRIBUTED TO LUCA DELLA ROBBIA (ITALIAN, 1399-1482): AN IMPORTANT 15TH CENTURY TIN GLAZED EARTHENWARE RELIEF DEPICTING POPE MARTIN V  the rectangular maiolica relief panel depicting a portrait of Pope Martin V in profile in white on a blue ground, facing left, dressed in cope and papal crown, his coat of arms (a column within a shield) to the upper left corner, inscribed at the base 'MARTINVS V', the reverse signed 'LRO' in blue, later mounted on a walnut panel with four fleur de lys iron brackets holding the panel in place,  46.5cm high x 33.5cm wide, the wooden mount 73.5cm high x 52cm wide Sold with a copy of a thermoluminescence analysis report dated 1/8/2018 from Arcadia Tecnologie per I Beni Culturali, Milan, stating that the sample taken indicates that the date of the object is consistent with the presumed dating of the piece, 15th century. Pope Martin V was known as Otto di Colonna (1368 – 1431) before his papal election, hence the column depicted in the top left corner. His greatest achievement was ending the Western Schism at the Council of Constance in 1417, and he remained Pope until his death in 1431.  Luca Della Robbia was the head of a family of artists famous for the glazed terracotta technique used in the present relief. Luca invented the technique which was to revolutionise terracotta sculpture in the 16th century. The bright glaze which has survived six hundred years and is still rich in colour, meant that his sculptures and portraits were easily seen in dark interiors or chapels, and the terracotta was easier to produce than carving in marble or stone.  Literature: A comparable relief is illustrated in Catalogue of Gothic and Renaissance Italian and French Art, The Tolentino Collection, the American Art Galleries, April 1924, New York 1924. Here attributed to Luca della Robbia.

          Luca della Robbia, 1399/ 1400 - 1482

          Est: €75,000 - €85,000

Luca della Robbia, 1399/ 1400 - 1482 HÖCHST BEDEUTENDES UND MUSEALES HOCH-RELIEF IN MARMOR MIT WAPPEN DER FLORENTINISCHEN FAMILIE BARTOLINI-SALIMBENI 45,5 x 197 x 50 cm. (931311) Luca della Robbia, 1399/ 1400 - 1482 HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT, MUSEAL-QUALITY MARBLE HIGH RELIEF WITH COAT OF ARMS OF THE FLORENTINE BARTOLINI-SALIMBENI FAMILY 45.5 x 197 x 50 cm. This relief originates from the early artistic period of Luca della Robbia, if it can be dated in the period between 1425 - 1430, it follows that della Robbia was in his late twenties when he created it. The relief is extensively discussed and depicted in the catalogue raisonné of the sculptor family della Robbia. Provenance: Formerly held at a Florentine Private Collection. Literature: Catalogue raisonné, I della Robbia, Il dialogo tra le Arti nel Rinascimento, Skira, p. 317, catalogue number 15, under the title of Angeli che recano l'arme Bartolini-Salimbeni e coppie di Leoni araldici.

Plaster Cast, early 20th Century, after Luca Della Robbia (Italian, 1400-1482) Trumpeters with Dancing Children, from the Cantoria Frieze. Unsigned Painted cast plaster, 20 x 18 1/4 x 3 1/2 in., unframed. Condition: Scattered chips and scratches, loss to u.r. corner and to side of u.l. corner, surface grime, with dirt and dust in the interstices. N.B. In 1431, Luca della Robbia (Italian, 1400-1482) was commissioned to create a marble Cantoria over the door of the Sacristy of the Masses, also known as the New Sacristy, in the cathedral in Florence. The original is now located in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence. The panel cast here illustrates the verse in the Psalms, "Praise him with sound of the trumpet." Casts of Renaissance and antique sculptures, made for sale by the commercial plaster casters, were enjoyed by collectors and were used to educate art students at the turn of the 20th Century.

NOTE This intimate composition was one of Luca della Robbia's most popular; Allan Marquand listed nine versions, including the example in the Corsini Collection, Florence. Versions are also in the carved doorframe of the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence and the vault of a cloister of Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa. The iconography of the Madonna holding Christ's foot and of Christ grasping his mother's veil, popular in Renaissance Italian panel painting as well as sculpture, derives from Byzantine icons. The present work, most likely used for private devotion, is unique in being set into a wood salver with a gilt rim and blue ground. The only other surviving image of the Madonna and Child set in a bowl from Quattrocento Florence is Donatello's Chellini Madonna, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. As Gentilini explains (op.cit.), the majority of Luca's sculptures from his early years were pigmented with natural tints and sometimes, as seen here, with white on a blue ground. It is only after the 1440s that he is consumed with producing glazed terracotta sculptures. Luca della Robbia is first documented in 1427 when he enrolled in the Arte della Lana (the wool-workers guild) and was mentioned as a collaborator of Lorenzo Ghiberti on the east door of the Baptistery in Florence. In the 1420s he became friendly with Brunelleschi who began using Luca's sculptures to decorate his buildings. In around 1428 he received the important commission for the marble Singing Gallery (Cantoria) for the organ loft of the Florence Cathedral. He was later invited to compete with Donatello on further decoration for the Cathedral. In 1445, he formed a partnership with Michelozzo for the execution of the bronze foors for the North Sacristy, formerly commissioned from Donatello. By the mid-15th century, he worked almost exclusively in tin-glazed earthenware (glazed terracotta), collaborating with his nephew Andrea della Robbia on what was to become a hugely popular and successful production. Christensen notes (op.cit.) that "the expressive range and rich formal inventiveness of Luca's terracotta sculpture established the norm by which painted images were judged."
