Alfred Robinson (1807-1895) American, Oil on Board

    Est: $200 - $400

Alfred Robinson (1807-1895) American, Oil on Board. Signed lower right. Depicts gentle waves along a rocky California beach. Overall size: 11 X 13 in. Sight size: 7 3/4 X 10 in. #1614 . Alfred Robinson was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1807. Acting as an agent for Boston merchants Bryant & Sturgis, Robinson traveled throughout California from 1829 to 1842, visiting ranchos and compiling stories for a book he would later publish. Predominantly traversing the coast between San Francisco and San Diego, he bought and traded hides, sold manufactured goods, and in his leisure made pencil sketches of people and landscapes along the way. In 1836 he married Ana Maria de la Guerra of Santa Barbara and eventually settled with her in San Francisco, where he worked as an employee of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. In his later days he used his sketches to create paintings, usually focused on the ocean. He passed away in October 1895.
