The colorful painting depicts a seaside town with boats in the water in the foreground and mountains in the background. Signed lower right. Vera Rockline, 1896 to 1934, was a Russian Post Impressionist painter. The artist started her career in Moscow, studying in the studio of Ilya Mashkov, who considered her one of his most brilliant students. She first studied in the studio of Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov in Moscow. In 1918 she began training in the studio of Alexandra Alexandrovna Exter in Kiev. Exter, known to Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire, had a great influence on Rockline's early style. In 1918 and 1919 she participated in the 14th Exhibition of the Moscow Artists' Association, and in 1922 in the Russian section of the Salon d'Automne and in the Salon des Tuleries. The journalist and critic Raymond Escholier praised her nudes. After beginnings under the influence of Cubism and Impressionism, Rockline found her own style, "somewhere between Courbet and Renoir," according to "L'Art et les Artistes." Admirers and patrons included Paul Poiret and the poet Charles Vildrac. The Russian exile and impressionist Sinaida Yevgenyevna Serebryakova, who lived in Paris, became a close friend of hers. Exhibited: 'Vera Rockline rétrospective', Galerie Drouart, Paris, 22 November-14 December 1984, no. 4/209. Note: Rockline was principally admired for her exquisite portrayal of female nudes, referred to by the renowned art critic and journalist, Raymond Escholier, as 'symphonies of flesh'. The prevalence of Cubism in her early work, received via Alexandra Ekster in Kiev, is still apparent in the mask-like quality of the face delineated from her neck and shoulders, reminiscent of the work of Paul Cézanne. However, the impressionistic manner of the overall brushwork evinces the development of her own mature style, regarded by the authoritative magazine, ‘L’Art et les Artistes,’ as an inspired synchronisation between Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Gustave Courbet. Far reaching comparisons have been made with Rockline's palette and flesh tones, at times reminiscent of the work of Sir Peter Paul Rubens and the chaste and monumental treatment of her figures apparently hearkening back to the icons of her native Russia. After settling in Montparnasse, Paris in 1922, Rockline exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne, as well as the Salon des Tuileries. She was also involved in the exhibition, Women of Montparnasse, dedicated to the emancipation of female artists. Please refer to department for condition report
