Norman Rockwell Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Caricaturist, b. 1894 - d. 1978

Artist Norman Perceval Rockwell was born in New York in 1894 and studied at The New York School of Art, The National Academy of Design, and The Art Students League. He began his career while still in his teens, becoming art director of Boys' Life magazine and freelancing for several other publications.

In 1916, artist Norman Perceval Rockwell began what would become the defining art of his career with his first cover painting for The Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell's regionalism art often reflected small town life and graced the cover of The Saturday Evening Post 322 times over nearly five decades with the magazine. He also created modern paintings about subjects that concerned him personally, including civil rights and poverty in America. He is considered one of the most famous illustrators in American art, and you can still find Rockwell’s regionalism art for sale as prints and in collections of his popular magazine covers. Highlight your love of travel or your patriotism with vintage Americana and regionalist paintings and lithographs.

"Flowers in Tender Bloom" From the Four Ages of Love Suite by Norman Rockwell Media: Lithograph on Paper Image Dimensions: 21" x 22" Year Produced: 1977 Edition Size: 200 Numbered (1-200), 60 Artists Proofs (1-60) Edition Number: A/P (Artist proof) Signed and Numbered in pencil by the artist Condition: In excellent condition Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator known for his iconic depictions of American culture created for The Saturday Evening Post. With a range of favorite subjects that included nuclear families, mischievous children, and small-town life, his work has achieved an iconic status: the 1943 painting of a Thanksgiving dinner, Freedom from Want, has been reproduced and parodied countless times in contemporary culture. As an artist, Rockwell has had a lasting effect on US society beyond any singular work, with his paintings seen as indelible images that went on to inspire American directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and particularly Robert Zemeckis, whose 1994 film Forrest Gump recreates several of Rockwell’s paintings as scenes throughout the film. Though he enjoyed success throughout his career, Rockwell’s idyllic and sentimental outlook on American society was not necessarily embraced by art critics, though his later politically activist work garnered praise for its tackling of controversial subjects. Born on February 3, 1894 in New York, NY, he went on to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. Rockwell notably had a longstanding relationship with the Boy Scouts of America, for which he contributed illustrations to their annual calendar. He died on November 8, 1978 in Stockbridge, MA.

Condition: In excellent Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator known for his iconic depictions of American culture created for The Saturday Evening Post.

Outward Bound is a painting by Norman Rockwell that was created for the cover of the October 1927 issue of Ladies' Home Journal. The painting has two subtitles: The Stay at Homes and Out to Sea. The painting depicts a boy, an older man, and a dog looking out to sea. Some speculate that the painting is about a grandfather who was once a sea captain and is watching his grandson set sail. The painting can be interpreted as a way to consider the relationship between older and younger generations. Rockwell was known for his work with children and older adults, as he felt they were more free to express their emotions. He often included children and the elderly in his work. Rockwell's paintings were often authentic, and he would sometimes invite strangers he observed into his studio to pose for him.
