Margaret Rocle (1897 - 1981) oil on canvas

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Title: Callas circa 1940 signed lower right oil on canvas, measures approx 24" x 30", in overall excellent condition, three very tiny paint chips top right that are not noticeable. Depicting nuns in the marketplace. Born in Watkins Glen, NY on March 6, 1893. Margot, as she was known, first studied at the PAFA. Later while taking dancing classes in NYC, she continued with Wm M. Chase and at the ASL under Henri, Bredin, and Wiles. She began her career as a barefoot dancer in the tradition of Isadora Duncan and played the vaudeville circuit until the outbreak of WWI. During the war she was a nurse for the allied forces in France. While there, she met artist Marius Rocle whom she married in Paris in 1918. The couple remained in Paris for a short period, but by 1921 had moved to Chula Vista in southern California. By the mid-1920s she had turned seriously to art and recognition came quickly as an important member of the San Diego art community. Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940"
