Festival Boats signed and titled (verso) ca. 1963 oil on canvas 40" x 30" (102 cm x 76 cm) WRITE UP: Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. started formulating his "River Festival" / "Festival Boats" series in the early 1960s. During that time, Rodriguez Sr. had just studied printmaking under a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship for Special Studies in Graphic Arts for two years at the Pratt Institute in New York City, earning his Diploma in 1962. Shortly after returning to the Philippines on February 28, 1962, he returned to managing his Manila- based Contemporary Graphic Arts Workshop (established in 1952 and formerly the Contemporary Arts Gallery before Rodriguez, Sr. left for New York). It was the first art institution in the Philippines to offer formal courses in graphic arts. There, Rodriguez, Sr. taught graphic arts, freehand drawing, and oil painting and honed the talents of young printmakers; among them was Virgilio "Pandy" Aviado. It was a tender form of giving back to the Filipino art community what skills he acquired and honed abroad. "Rodriguez lost no time in embarking on his mission to teach and promote print in his studio, in schools, and in far- flung provinces where he was welcomed with enthusiasm by the masses who were introduced to fine art.," writes Eva Florentino in her essay "Struggles and Triumphs" published in the monograph "Manuel Rodriguez, Sr.: Into the Threshold." Back to the subject of "River Festival" / "Festival Boats" series, Aviado, writing in his essay "Me and My Sensei" (pertaining to Rodriguez, Sr.), says that he was introduced to his mentor in 1963 and "saw Mang Maning develop his "River Festival" / "Festival Boats" series from various media." Festival boats, or pagoda in the Filipino lexicon, hold a distinct place in Philippine religious festivities and native culture as well. In Bulacan, there is the famous Bocaue River Festival/ Bocaue Pagoda Festival, held annually every first Sunday of July in honor of the Holy Cross of Wawa, a historic (and miraculous) 19th-century Catholic relic. There was also once a grand fluvial procession held every second Sunday of February in the town of Pateros in honor of its patroness, Santa Marta. Other iconic pagoda festivals in the country include the one in Cardona, Rizal, celebrated every October 4 in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, and the "Pagoda-Caracol" in Malabon every December 8, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In this work from the early 1960s, Rodriguez, Sr. depicts a flock of joyous devotees surrounding a towering three- layered pagoda carrying the sacred image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is a familial folk atmosphere that Rodriguez Sr. imbibes in the work: playfully quaint and flamboyant. Here, we can see Rodriguez Sr.'s early forays into his trademark "color vibrations," which he would only formally introduce three decades later in his 1993 Soho exhibition in New York. These "color vibrations" seemingly mimic the repetition and progression of patterns present in Philippine folk art and, thus, exhibit a unique interplay between form and color that highlights a celebration of identity rooted in communal existence. "Art is prayer. It is silent worship. Art uses energy in a space we call love," Rodriguez, Sr. once said. Festival Boats, with its exuberant atmosphere, encapsulate a form of profound thanksgiving. And it is in this avenue that Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. steers this work—his thanksgiving to his Creator for the gift of art and the eventual honor and privilege of doing and teaching art as both a form of reverence to Him and giving back to the land that first honed his virtuoso. Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) - Market Day

            Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) Market Day signed and dated 2002 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 30” x 40” (76 cm x 102 cm) Market Day immortalizes Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr.'s hope and healing amidst the physical ruins and moral devastation of war. Rodriguez, his wife Naty, and their first-born Manuel "Boy" Jr. had been living in Intramuros when the Japanese invaded Manila in December 1941. Rodriguez wanted to transfer his family to his native Cebu but changed his mind after the last boat to the province tragically sunk in the heavily mined waters of Manila Bay. Rodriguez and his family then decided to settle temporarily and wait for the cessation of the war in the humble town of Pasacao in Camarines Sur, his wife's homeland. Pasacao would not be spared from the atrociousness of the Japanese forces. According to Pasacao’s historical data papers from the National Library of the Philippines, the soldiers established their headquarters in the población and killed those they suspected as spies or guerilla members. Occasionally, they would steal some of the people’s properties, including household belongings, crops, and livestock. Houses, especially those that the owners abandoned were burned to the ground. The current owner, a friend of the late artist, vividly reminisces: He [Rodriguez] loved this place so much that he vividly remembered it as if it was yesterday. When World War II broke out, this town was completely burned to the ground by the Japanese forces. He told me that he felt so sad to see everything gone. "That's why when he created this painting for me, it took him five months to finish because he was constantly being "called "to make it better. Each time he thought it was finished, he told me that he couldn't allow himself to stop; Mang Maning felt like if he stopped short of perfection, he wouldn't give this piece commemorating that town and its people justice." The bursting of colors and their harmonious dancing with the artist's brush strokes create a throbbing effect, which Rodriguez coined "color vibrations." "He believes that colors bring positive and healing properties and energy to the person observing his painting," says the owner. "That's why Mang Maning told me that there's not a single brushstroke of black in this piece, Market Day, because black is not a healing color, according to him. He believes in color vibrations so much that he meditates in front of his personal piece each morning when he wakes up. I guess it worked for him because he was 100+ before he passed away." Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) - Fish Vendors

            Est: ₱100,000 - ₱130,000

Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) Fish Vendors signed (right) dated 1954 wax 25” x 20 1/2” (64 cm x 52 cm) Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr., also known by his nickname Mang Maning, was born in Cebu, Philippines. He grew up in a humble family, his father was a goldsmith and engraver who created ornaments for churches, designed liturgical vestments, and crafted jewelry. The young Manuel would soon leave for Manila to study Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines. When the debate between the conservatives and the modernists was at its height, he sided with the modernists. Although he trained in the academic tradition, he preferred to deal with abstract human forms and experiment with textural values, as observed in this early work, Fish Vendors. The wax piece at hand, dated 1954, was exhibited at the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual, Manila. Rodriguez Sr. explored various subjects and themes in his artworks, drawing inspiration from daily life, bucolic landscapes, and Filipino culture. His canvases are inhabited by farmers, fishermen, vendors, and other individuals in their natural settings, the kind of setting that showcases the natural beauty of the Philippines. Sometimes, his works also touched on religious and spiritual themes that are deeply ingrained in Filipino culture, evoking a sense of unity and community. Rodriguez Sr. had a multidisciplinary approach to art, as his artistic endeavor also delved into printmaking. Often referred to as the "Father of Philippine Printmaking," he was instrumental in promoting printmaking as a legitimate and respected art form in the country. In addition to that, he was also a teacher and mentor to many aspiring artists. He shared his expertise and knowledge with younger generations, contributing to the growth and development of Philippine art. The legacy of Rodriguez Sr. lives on through his oeuvres, his influence on Philippine printmaking, and his contributions to the broader art community. In 2007, he became a recipient of the Presidential Merit Award for his contribution to the visual arts. (Isabella Romarate)

            Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) - Mother and Child

            Est: ₱1,600,000 - ₱2,080,000

Manuel A. Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) Mother and Child signed and dated 1967 (lower left) oil on canvas 44 1/2" x 24 1/2" (113 cm x 61 cm) Although Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. is now widely acclaimed as the “Father of Philippine Printmaking” and had been honored with a plethora of awards and showered with numerous acclaims, both in his motherland and abroad, throughout his lifetime, there exists a tragic side note to his prolific life and career—one that strikes through the core of the collective Filipino soul. In this monumental yet moving masterpiece, Rodriguez Sr. paints a ubiquitous subject: the mother and child. Although one may surmise the inherent tenderness that the subject of a mother carrying her child in her arms generally exudes, this was not the case for Rodriguez; his ‘mother and child’ is an image of unfortunate loss and intense longing for the protective embrace and enamoring and solicitous care of a mother. The significance of Rodriguez’s Mother and Child can be seen within the context of the artist’s mournful recollection as a young boy. An excerpt from the essay ‘Struggles and Triumphs of Manuel Rodriguez, Sr.’ written by Eva Florentino, a longtime family friend of the Rodriguezes, writes: “Manuel remembers seeing his mother [named Antonia Temario] for the first time when he was brought to her funeral. He and his sister had been separated from her to prevent them from getting infected with tuberculosis. He was three, and his sister was one year old when their mother died. In a ritual for the dead, a relative swung them, one at a time, over their mother’s bier. This experience is etched in his memory.” There exists an atmosphere of bereavement in this work due to its solemnity both in aspects of its technicality and unspoken declaration of human sentiments. The mother possesses a somber facial expression and pitiful eyes that exude a penetrating gaze—a likely allusion to the tragic desolation that Rodriguez’s mother had to endure to safeguard her children from the afflictions of a deadly disease. The child’s face is rendered blank, signifying the inescapable void and the insatiable longing of Rodriguez, who was left motherless at a very tender and vulnerable age. One can see Rodriguez’s early experimentation into his trademark technique he would eventually coin as “color vibrations” (he would formally introduce this technique in his 1993 exhibition titled ‘Through the Eye of the Needle’ at the Breskin, Pearl, and Rodriguez Gallery in Soho, New York), making this piece evidence of his foray into his unique style and dedication to forge a distinct path in the art scene as early as the 1960s. Color vibrations of jarring and muted hues radiate delicate visual lyricism and a balance between the sheer honesty and straightforwardness of the subject and the complex emotions it can stimulate. But perhaps the emotional gravitas of this piece lies in its pronouncement of the enduring loss of a son over his mother; he did not have the chance to experience the immaculateness of a mother’s unconditional love. One can imagine the gush of poignancy that Rodriguez felt as he immortalized on his canvas a memory he had never experienced. (Adrian Maranan)

He engaged in painting to considerable acclaim while aligning himself with the modernists. His technical capabilities with prints were excellent, but he was as well playful with colors, forms, and much later in his career, textures. Be it abstract or figurative, a penchant for color is often expected in the oeuvres of Rodriguez Sr. The admired paintings of Mang Maning, as he was fondly referred to by his fellow artists, are mostly his multicolored representations of pastoral life and rustic celebrations. In this particular oil on paper piece, the modernist master showcases his unique and unparalleled knack for figurative forms. His figurative approach resembles impressionism, and his brand of pointillism evokes nostalgic memories and familiar scenes. Early in his career, Rodriguez Sr. was mainly concerned with the natural beauty of his surroundings, given that he was mentored by the likes of Fernando Amorsolo and Fabian de la Rosa. However, while Rodriguez Sr. spent most of his life outside the country, his subjects never veered away from local themes, always harking back to his beloved hometown of Cebu. A year before his passing in 2017, the mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, issued a proclamation that declared August 17, 2016 as “Manuel Rodriguez Sr. Day” in recognition of the artist’s contributions to society through art. PROPERTY FROM THE LOIDA NICOLAS LEWIS COLLECTION Manuel A. Rodriguez, Sr. (1912 - 2017) Flight of Angels signed and dated 1997 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist Reaching for the Skies for the Filipino Artist by LISA GUERRERO NAKPIL Born on New Year’s Day in Cebu to a jeweler named Severino Rodriguez, Manuel Antonio had art running through his veins at an early age. He would say that he first became enamored with painting while watching an uncle dabble in watercolor when he was just four years old. He would follow his dream to Manila to enroll at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, from where he graduated in 1939. He would attract attention as early as 1948 by winning major prizes at the Art Association of the Philippines’ influential annual exhibition and competition and become a stalwart of the iconic Philippine Art Gallery, the country’s first gallery to champion abstract art. Rodriguez would be featured in the Philippine Art Tour in New York City sponsored by the PAG which would prophesy his career trajectory in the United States. In 1973, Rodriguez would continue to win prizes with the AAP; and would be conferred the Award of Merit by the Association for his contribution to the ‘Advancement of Art in the Philippines.’ Finally in 1976, he would bid farewell to Manila to move to New York, where he put up his own studio, the Pioneer Print Center on Broadway. He would continue to paint and make his mark in his new setting. The work at hand, Flight of Angels, is a joyful celebration of femininity and freedom. Three girls appear ready to fly into the stratosphere, the wind in their hair, their feet never touching the ground. The painting is positively alive with the energy of the colors that create a distinct texture that is recognizably Rodriguez’. In the background, three trees magnify the mood of liberation. This thoroughly exuberant portrait of young women reaching for the skies was to be found in the home of Mrs. Loida Nicolas Lewis, amid her assemblage of Picassos and other European post-impressionist masters in her Park Avenue triplex. Mrs. Lewis was quoted as saying that it was important that this work find its way back to the Philippines in support of a good cause — the development of Filipino artists as they spread their wings abroad in much the same way as this Flight of Angels.

Manuel Rodriguez Sr. (1912 - 2017) Jones Bridge signed (lower left) ca. 1960 oil on canvas 26" x 34" (66 cm x 86 cm) I n this particular oil on canvas piece, the modernist master Manuel Rodriguez Sr. showcases his unique and unparalleled knack for abstract and figurative forms. Early in his career, Rodriguez was mainly concerned with the natural beauty of his surroundings, given that he was mentored by the likes of Fernando Amorsolo and Fabian de la Rosa. But, his brief yet fruitful stint abroad proved to be fundamental in Rodriguez’s artistic growth. He met seminal printmakers Mauricio Lasansky and Gabor Peterdi and was introduced to their unique approach to art and the medium of printmaking. This piece exemplifies Rodriguez’s shift towards his more contemporary style. The figures are bare and simple yet layered with context and meaning, giving them a timeless allure while the play of tones creates a solid yet shifting dreamlike visual quality. From the bustling scenery of the historic Jones Bridge, every aspect of Rodriguez’s work is carefully planned and executed, a hallmark of the artist’s genius. Along with Galo Ocampo and Vicente Manansala, Manuel Rodriguez Sr. was among the three moderns who won in the 1955 AAP Art competition which caused the conservatives to walk out. Mang Maning, as he is fondly called, is a pioneering artist who revived printmaking as a major art form which led to the graphics arts movement in the Philippines. He was not only an artist but also a teacher and maestro loved and admired by his students. Rodriguez Sr. contributed to furthering modern art in more ways other than painting and printmaking. He once managed the Philippine Contemporary Art Gallery where, with the urging of Manansala, Ang Kiukok held his first show in 1954.
