** This is an oversized piece that requires 3rd party shipping. Please ask for a quote prior to bidding.** Francisco Rodriguez Sanchez-Clement (Spanish, 1893-1968). Oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on lower right. A dazzling painting by Francisco Rodriguez Sanchez-Clement depicting a handsome Spanish gaucho confidently commanding a herd of energetic cattle. This painting demonstrates Sanchez-Clement's keen eye for dramatic composition. The gaucho and his steed are vividly defined front-and-center as the lively herd kicks up dust in the middle ground, rhythmically progressing behind him. Sanchez-Clement has expertly altered values, saturation, and hues to achieve atmospheric perspective, rendering the cattle as well as the distant land and sky in an impressionistic haze that imbues the scene with a convincing sense of depth. A spectacular painting that possesses an almost cinematic quality by Francisco Rodriguez Sanchez-Clement, an artist whose pride in his heritage fueled his artistic passion, set in an attractive custom frame. Size (painting): 20" L x 24" W (50.8 cm x 61 cm) Size (frame): 25.125" L x 28.875" W (63.8 cm x 73.3 cm) Francisco Rodríguez Sanchez-Clement graduated from the Academia de Bellas Artes de Madrid. Much of his oeuvre demonstrates the influence of his heritage and the gypsy tradition. Sanchez-Clement crossed Europe with the caravans and sketched the scenes that unfolded before him. Following his return to Spain, he decided to move to Paris. In this art capital of the world Sanchez-Clement pursued his love for figure painting, creating compositions that captured flamenco dancers and the drama of the bullfight. His works were exhibited in the Paris salons as well as other European venues and were also published in the art catalogues of Frost & Reed Limited, London, England. FRANCISCO RODRÍGUEZ SÁNCHEZ-CLEMENT (Elche, Alicante, 1893 - Santa Pola, Alicante, 1968). Untitled. Oil on canvas adhered to cardboard. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 23 x 32 cm; 37 x 46 cm (frame). Rodríguez Sánchez-Clement studied at the San Fernando School, where he received classes from such eminent Valencians as C. Pla, Muñoz Degrain and J. Garnelo. He was awarded the title of professor of drawing in 1914, with a gold medal in colouring and composition, among other honorary diplomas. During these years he also studied the classics, especially Velázquez and Zurbarán, copying in the Prado Museum. He made a trip to Seville, where he was impressed by Andalusian folklore, which he repeatedly depicted in his canvases with motifs taken from gypsy camps. In 1921 he returned to Elche, and two years later he founded, together with José Lillo, an artistic workshop where he produced numerous tapestries, paintings, and also designs and decorations for fallas. In 1932 he moved again to Madrid, where his painting was a great success, and he held exhibitions in the Círculo de Bellas Artes, took part in the Salón de Otoño, etc. The Civil War interrupted this period, and the painter returned to Elche in 1937. Previously, in 1912, he had received an honourable mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where he took part again in 1915, 1930, 1934 and finally 1936, where he was practically assured of a second medal for the painting "The Painter and his Model". After the war, he took part again in the 1948 edition. Once in Elche he was appointed director of the Municipal School of Drawing and Painting, where he tutored outstanding artists from Elche. In 1944 he obtained the prize of honour at the Provincial Exhibition of Fine Arts, and three years later he moved to Valencia, where he exhibited with great success, and his works were even exported to different parts of the world. In fact, in France he was known by the nickname of "Le petit Sorolla", due to his loose brushstrokes and the similarity of his luminous and impressionist treatment. He was also awarded a second medal by the Portuguese Society of Fine Arts. He spent his last days in Santa Pola, next to the Mediterranean Sea, which he captured so well in his canvases. His legacy has been very important, given the painter's great fecundity, and among his themes are those of gypsies and Flemish women, his famous palcos, portraits, landscapes and seascapes, genre scenes, religious themes, allegories, majorales, bullfights and especially his famous female nudes, which reveal Rodríguez Sánchez-Clement's mastery like no other subject. Almost twenty years after his death, in 1984, a great tribute was dedicated to him in the Sorolla Hall in Elche.
