      RUDOLF KONRAD

      Est: $200 - $300

RUDOLF KONRAD (1891-1964) Wehrmacht general during World War II, held the rank of General of Mountain Troops by the end of the war. Good content war-date A.L.S. in German, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], May 13, 1944, to fellow general FRANZ BOHME (1885-1947), Hitler's Plenipotentiary Commanding General in the Balkans, and commander-in-chief in German-occupied Norway. In full: 'I flew over from Sena on May 7th and have been assigned to begin in the Fuhrer's army headquarters. I shall make a call on you in the next few days.' Accompanied by a signed and hand-addressed envelope. Slight creasing, else fine. In the autumn of 1943, Konrad was put in command of the mountain corps on the Isthmus of Perekop in present day Ukraine. A month prior to this letter, the Red Army began a major offensive in the area and the German troops were eventually pushed back to the Sevastopol fortress. Konrad, as referenced here, was on his way to the Fuhrer's headquarters to be subject to a court martial as the commanding officer. He would later be acquitted and returned to command.
