'Moulin Rouge' Original lithographic poster. Plate signed. Printer Chaix. (Encres Lorilleux. Rue Bergère, 20. Paris. 19.008.97.) 81 x 58.8 cm. The Carnavalet Museum - Histoire de Paris has another, larger-format copy of this poster, dated 1897, with inventory number AFF1939. Like this one, it is also signed in the plate: 'ROEDEL' and printed by Chaix. The poster we have here retains the unprinted part reserved for the specific announcement of events and their dates. Auguste Roedel was a French poster artist, designer, illustrator, and caricaturist who, at the age of just 20, began frequenting bars and cabarets and designing posters. In 1885, he was the first to represent the famous cancan dancer La Goulue. He worked as a caricaturist for newspapers such as 'Le Courrier français' or 'L'Estampe moderne,' and four of his creations were reproduced in 'Les Maîtres de l'affiche,' a monthly publication which was in existence between 1895 and 1900 and which aimed to showcase the most beautiful posters by leading French and foreign artists of the time. The magazine was created by the poster master Jules Chéret, with whom Roedel had worked since 1890, and who was the artistic director of the press that printed this poster: Imprimerie Chaix. Starting in 1895, he also became the official poster artist for the Moulin Rouge. He was the director of the magazine 'La Vache enragée,' launched by his friend and collaborator Adolphe Léon Willette. He died suddenly in 1900 due to absinthe abuse. Art Nouveau

ARTIST: AUGUSTE ROEDEL (1859-1900) SIZE: 35 3/4 x 49 1/2 in./90.7 x 125.7 cm PRINTER: A. Farradesche, Paris DESCRIPTION: In 1892, Firmin Bouisset introduced a young schoolgirl into Menier’s chocolate advertising (see No. 139) and it became one of the most popular poster characters of the period—so much so that even when other artists were used, the company insisted on using the girl. Obligingly, Roedel came up with a particularly winsome charmer in a polka-dot dress toting an oversized bar of chocolate. Roedel was a caricaturist, illustrator, watercolorist, and lithographer; he aligned himself in Paris with a group of Montmartre artists such as Willette, Léandre, and Caran d’Ache, supplied drawings for Le Courrier Français, and produced posters, mostly for the local cabarets and theatres. Very little is known about Roedel (not even his first name), but he was a key figure in Montmartre's infamous bohemian culture. In his short career, Roedel designed many magazine illustrations and a few posters, mostly depicting the windmills of the Moulin de la Galette. Here, with the windmills in the background, he delivers a half-serious, half-comic gem. "The laundry girl, who is like one of Steinlen's blanchisseuses, and wearing the same gingham uniform, works hard with an old fashioned iron and a wet sponge to produce the steam. Down the street walk three animated objects composed completely of collars and cuffs. The fantasy of the poster recalls the work of Grandville." (Jane Abdy p. 110). Chocolat Menier.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

In 1892, Firmin Bouisset introduced a young schoolgirl into Menier' chocolate's advertising (see PAI-XXXIX, 150) and it became one of the most popular poster characters of the period-so much so that even when other artists were used, the company insisted on using the girl. Obligingly, Roedel came up with a particularly winsome charmer in a polka-dot dress toting an oversized bar of chocolate. Roedel was a caricaturist, illustrator, watercolorist and lithographer; he aligned himself in Paris with a group of artists of Montmartre such as Willette, Léandre and Caran d'Ache, supplied drawings for Le Courrier français and produced posters, mostly for the local cabarets and theaters.
