The present work is registered in the Peter Roehr Archive, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt/M. (with dimensions of the mat). Serial sequences are the decisive theme in the oeuvre of Peter Roehr. The artist follows the principle of sequence in montages of typescripts, photographs, film and sound material. Roehr's acquaintance with Paul Maenz in 1964 formed a personal and artistic milestone. A commercial artist in a large American agency in Frankfurt and later gallerist and art collector, Maenz became not only a close friend to Roehr, but also an artistic partner and supporter, and enabled him access to advertising material which he assimilated in many works from the end of 1964, in particular coffee motifs from an advertising campaign for the instant coffee brand Maxwell. For this he used a collage technique in which the same motif detail is cut out of the proofs and mounted in rows on the support. In the choice of material and image detail, the dimensions of the work and the structure of the composition, Roehr sets concrete criteria, oriented by the understandings of information aesthetics. “Examine, decide, misuse without altering, to confront ones peers, allow transformation, without transforming oneself. […] The middle between the still perceptible object and the already independent aesthetic structure is fixed in the montages” the artist records in his notes. (Peter Roehr, quoted from: exhib.cat. Peter Roehr 1944-1968, Neues Museum Weimar, Ostfildern-Ruit 2000, p. 38).

        Peter Roehr, Untitled (FO-123), 1965

        Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed, dated and inscribed '141-2-65 Peter Roehr', with estate stamp and designated "FO-123" verso. This work is registered in the archive of Peter Roehr, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt/M. Peter Roehr considers repetition a means of creating an awareness of what otherwise remains unrecognizable in the everyday use of signs and images. Serial aggregation only causes an apparent removal of these things' meaning. The initial loss of meaning is followed by a more conscious perception. Roehr's works appear balanced, there is no beginning and no ending, they are without hierarchy and as such free of an y tension: 'The picture has no focal point, it happens everywhere." (Corinna Dirting, in: Peter Roehr-Werke aus Frankfurter Sammlungen, exhib.cat. MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst und Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt am Main 2009, p.29.)

        Peter Roehr, Untitled (FO-48), 1965

        Est: €35,000 - €40,000

With written confirmation from the Estate of Peter Roehr, Paul Maenz, via email dated 7.10.2013. “I feel I am identical with what I do. In my 'Montages' I unreservedly realise everything that is important to me. I believe I am free.” (Peter Roehr, Notizen aus dem Nachlass, in: Rudi Fuchs, Paul Maenz (et al.), Peter Roehr, exhib.cat., Cologne 1977, p. 31) When Peter Roehr died after a severe illness at the age of just 24 on 15 August 1968, he left behind a substantial oeuvre that displays an artistic maturity and self-contained quality which are still impressive today. The development of his oeuvre took place within a small number of years: Roehr's first works, created around 1960, were still influenced by Informalism. Yet over the next few years he quickly developed his first collages from everyday materials such as grains of rice and cords which are akin to the artistic understanding of someone like Piero Manzoni or the ZERO Group. From 1964 onwards Roehr eventually started to work on his “Photo Montages”. They are series of images, cut out from magazines and advertising brochures, stuck together closely next to each other and repeating an identical subject. He targeted companies such as VW and Chevrolet, asking them to send him large amounts of images. One theme that became characteristic in his photo montages was the automobile. It turned out to be an ideal way for him to symbolise the basic idea of objects in a series, as it expressed the aesthetics and dynamism of repetition. In “Untitled (FO-48)” Roehr developed a special suction effect through an oblique perspective and the direction of the road where a VW Beetle can be seen on the horizon, racing towards the sun in an endless loop. It shows the special feature of his photo montages, as they are entirely the artist's idea, while at the same time conveying emotions to which the viewer can relate - in our case an almost tangible sense of speed and perhaps also of freedom.
