      Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Oil on canvas, framed measurements: 126 x 101 cm, framed measurements: 147 x 122 cm. Juan de Roelas, de las Roelas, painter of Flemish origin (Flanders, c. 1570-Olivares, 1625). It is documented that his father's name was Jacques, who call themselves Flemish, and agree to repay a loan of 300 reales. The second deed refers to the rental of a house that they took on Calle de los Baños in Valladolid. From this it is deduced that Juan de Roelas, Flemish by birth and not Sevillian, was the son of a painter of the same nationality. It is known that in the year 1598 he was working in Valladolid in the commemorative events of the death of King Philip II of Spain, collaborating in the design of his funerary monument. There he remained until 1604, when he obtained a prebend or favor from the Count-Duke of Olivares, who protected him. Since 1598 he was working in Valladolid on the commemorative events of the death of King Philip II of Spain and his works are linked to the styles of Veronese and Tintoretto, whose canvases he must have seen in situ. Having learned the Italian style of late Mannerism, Roelas introduced Bassano-style light effects, which make his work easily recognizable. At the same time, he became a wonderful portraitist of everyday life, completing his compositions on sacred themes with absolutely vulgar elements from daily life, which were highly criticized by other painters of the time, such as Francisco Pacheco, Velázquez's father-in-law. .
