Nicholas Roerich Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1874 - d. 1947

(born 1874; died 1947) Russian artist. Born to an upper middle class Russian family, Roerich displayed an early talent for drawing. Although he wanted to pursue a career as an artist, his father, who was a lawyer and notary, did not consider it to be a fit vocation for a responsible member of society. A compromise was reached and in 1893 Nicholas enrolled simultaneously in the Academy of Art and at St. Petersburg University. The late 1890's saw a blossoming in Russian arts, particularly in St. Petersburg, where the avant-garde was forming groups and alliances, led by the young Sergei Diaghilev, who was a year or two ahead of Roerich at law school, and was one of the first to appreciate his talents as a painter. Roerich designed Stravinsky's “The Rite of Spring” for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and it was this success that established him as an exceptionally individual artist. After leaving university, Roerich met, and later married, Helena, daughter of the architect Shaposhnikov and niece of the composer Mussorgsky. Helena was a talented pianist and author of many books. Roerich and Helena became firm believers in Theosophy, which holds that spiritual masters of long ago, can reappear in dreams, and even be reincarnated, to bring peace to the world. This fervent desire for world peace led Roerich on a 16,000-mile expedition through Central Asia, to Kullu in the Himalayas, where, in 1928, he founded a research station and developed a philosophy in which art would unite humanity. He became involved in politics and launched the Roerich Peace Pact, which called for the worldwide protection of monuments and cultural treasures during war and peace. In 1929, Nicholas Roerich was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and finally, in 1935, the pact was signed in the presence of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who said, 'The pact possesses a spiritual significance far greater than the text itself.' The pact is still in force today. Nicholas Roerich died in Kullu on December 13, 1947. His body was cremated and the ashes buried on a slope facing the mountains he loved and portrayed in many of his paintings.

We would like to thank Gvido Trepsa, the Director of the Nicholas Roerich Museum, New York, for his assistance in researching this lot. The present painting by Nicholas Roerich, executed in 1902, represents an early work in the artist's career. Just five years after graduating from the Academy of Arts, still living in St Petersburg, Roerich already began to gain widespread recognition. He participated in major exhibitions across Russia and Europe, where his works often received acclaim and awards. Known for his landscapes, mystical scenes, and theatrical designs, Roerich produced very few portraits. The present study, 'Old Man,' was presented by Roerich to Aleksander Belyi, a staff member of the School at the Imperial Society for the Advancement of Arts, where Roerich served as Director from 1906 to 1917. In 1918, Aleksander sold the study to Mr. Nikiforov. Aleksander Belyi (1874-1934) was a painter born in the Kherson Governorate. He received his artistic education at the Odessa Art School and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, beginning in 1894. From 1902 onwards, Belyi taught at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in St. Petersburg, as well as at the school of N.K. Roerich

Expresses gratitude for the letter and catalogue, notes: "As I suspected, Makovsky failed to organize the exhibition," mentions his upcoming trip to Novgorod, and writes about new works such as "Beyond the Seas of Great Lands," "Varangian Woman," described as "similar to Unkrada but much more successful," and "On the Shore of the Northern Sea." Mentions photographer Karl Kubesch (1872-1941), who did not come to photograph "Mikula," and the artwork "Idols," exhibited in Brussels, which "Kubesch captured very poorly." In 1910, K. Makovsky organized the exhibition "World of Art" at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris. Among the participants were L.S. Bakst, A.N. Benois, M.V. Dobuzhinsky, A.Ya. Golovin, K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, N.K. Roerich. The prevailing works were theatrical and decorative. In 1911, the XV Archaeological Congress was scheduled to take place in Novgorod. The organizers proposed to Roerich, on the eve of the congress, to conduct archaeological excavations at Ryurikovo Gorodishche. Rerikh enthusiastically accepted the offer and, along with his brother Boris and archaeologist Makarenko, began the work in the summer of 1910. Denis Roche (1868-1951) was a French writer and translator. Intrigued by the Russian language, he traveled to St. Petersburg in 1898, where he met Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Repin. He translated works by N. Leskov, I. Turgenev, I. Shmelev, V. Nabokov, and other authors from Russian. Roche's translation resulted in a twenty-volume collection of Chekhov's works, and in 1928, he was awarded the Langlois Prize by the French Academy for translating the story "Neighbors." Roerich, Agni Publishing, Gallery of Art Academy, Art Center Kunstberatung. Samara-Moscow-Zurich, 2011. Vol 2, pg. 458 (illustrated) LOT NOTES When Nicholas Roerich published a monograph of 62 of his works in 1924, he chose to include two landscapes from his stay in Karelia (1917-1919). One of the two is the present work, painted in 1917, a landscape of Lake Hympola (Hymppelä in Finnish). His choice suggests that Roerich held this painting in particularly high regard and it remains one of the best representations of what was a prolific period in his artistic career. The calm waters and vibrant blues of this work betray none of the turmoil that surrounded Roerich's personal life during this time. He was suffering from chronic pneumonia and had just fled from Russia to escape the violence and chaos of the Revolution. He settled in the Lake Ladoga area, living on the Yhinlahti estate with his family, and painted almost 100 works in 1917 alone. That year was marked by struggle. Letters to friends reveal a lingering sense of detachment and depression, and more than one of his Karelia landscapes lack the life that he was so desperately seeking. This painting was a breakthrough, proof that Roerich could retaliate against adversity by immersing himself in waters and rock formations that had stood the test of time. He grounds himself on a ledge, inviting the viewer to sit with him and gaze across the lake, past the distant mountain range and cloud formations. The vast distance between the brown rock in the foreground and the deep blue horizon is not unlike Roerich's own journey from sickness and strife to hope and a renewed sense of purpose. In the middle, the rocks display an intense battle between the elements, full of conflicting twists and turns. But, despite the cool Northern light, tiny flecks of deep golden yellow peak out from the icy blues, signs of warmth in a desolate landscape. Roerich exhibited most of the works painted in 1917-1918 in his personal exhibitions in Stockholm (November, 1918), as well as Copenhagen and Helsinki (1919) and later London (1920. The present work was almost certainly among them, even though we are unable to identify it in the exhibition catalogs as the titles of the Karelia landscapes kept changing at the time. We would like to thank Gvido Trepša, Senior Researcher at Nicholas Roerich Museum, New York, for providing catalogue information. CONDITION Observed out of frame, the painting appears in age-appropriate condition. Minor rubbing and wear to the perimeter resulting from the framing technique.
