This report cites a label from the Delegate Board of Seizure with inventory number 16804; Alpedrete provenance and collection number 47, now missing. This exceptional portrait of Julio Romero de Torres represents Rosario Mansi (1883-1974) and Ana Maria Garnica y Mansi (1908-1937), mother and daughter, posing luxuriously dressed, holding a fan and a rose respectively. They are in front of an open window that shows a landscape where the family's farmhouse in Las Arenas de Getxo appears on the left, along with a classical sculpture and other palatial elements that close the composition on the right and complete the majesty of the work. Rosario Mansi was the wife of the lawyer and politician Pablo Garnica y Echeverria (1876-1959), born in Madrid and who held different important positions during the reign of Alfonso XIII, as Minister of Graces and Litigation of the State. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, deputy for Cantabria and attorney in the Cortes. The girl, Ana Maria, who is represented at 9 or 10 years old, had an unfortunate and premature end, being murdered on Playa de las Arenas along with her husband, Gabriel Zubiria y Somonte, in 1937. Pablo Garnica, a great fan of the work of Julio Romero de Torres, was also portrayed by the Cordoban painter in a minister's uniform and also acquired the well-known work “Marta and Maria”, exhibited at the London Academy in 1920. JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES Córdoba 1874 - 1930 Conjuro (Twilight). H. 1918 Oil on cardboard Lefranc Measurements 31.4 x 20.5 cm Origin: - Private collection, Madrid. In 1918 the Board of Directors of the Real Casino of Madrid commissioned the Córdoban painter Julio Romero de Torres to create a large canvas to decorate the Royal Hall in which other prominent artists of the time such as Manuel Benedito, Anselmo Miguel Nieto and Fernando participated. Alvarez de Sotomayor. The painting titled "Conjuring" although in some sources it is also called "Twilight" is a beautiful allegory of the ages of women. As researcher Mercedes Valverde has seen, "the master associates the last rays of the sun with the mature woman who appears in the background, as a counterpoint to the youth of the naked model." The artist seems to evoke his admiration for the famous nude Venuses of the Venetian Renaissance in a balanced composition more in line with the European symbolist movement. This work belongs to a select group of sketches by the painter of which only five have reached us (Basabe Family, Doctor Casana's Family, Consecration of the Copla, Aceituneras, Museum of Fine Arts of Córdoba and Poema de Córdoba, Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga). In all of them you can see a quick and fluid brushstroke, with vibrant colors and elongated strokes that denote his total mastery of drawing. JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES Córdoba 1874 - 1930 Portrait of a lady Oil and tempera on canvas Signed Measurements 35 x 40 cm Origin: - Acquired at the Barbié Gallery in Barcelona on March 13, 1987 (certificate attached). - Private collection, Barcelona. This work corresponds to the prototype or model of the female portrait that brought so much success to the painter from Córdoba during his prolific career as a painter. These portraits or busts were widely demanded by the Spanish bourgeoisie during the decades of the 1920s and 1930s. From his central home-studio on Pelayo Street, where the great writers of the time such as Azorín and Valle Inclán passed, Romero de Torres immortalized numerous personalities, mostly aristocrats and prestigious professionals. These works show the fascination of the painter from Cordoba for the portraits of the Italian Renaissance, like his admired Leonardo da Vinci. The scheme is usually always the same; the torso portrait of the effigy on a neutral or dim background in which a landscape is outlined. We thank Mercedes Valverde for her help in cataloging this work.

The painting was a personal gift from the artist to Mr. Enrique when he was then directing the Almadén Mining Facultative School around 1921. Mrs. Josefina posed personally for the Cordovan painter who knew how to masterfully capture this painting beautiful portrait of great elegance and psychological introspection. JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES (Cordoba, 1874 - 1930) . "Nun". Graphite on paper. With faults and tear in the upper right area. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 34 x 20 cm; 56 x 42 cm (frame). With a sober scarcity of colour Romero de Torres, configures this resounding portrait in which we are presented with the delicate profile of a young girl who is dressed in the habit of a nun. Despite the religious vestments, the gesture with the half-open lips and the deep gaze bring us closer to a young woman marked by sensuality, an indisputable feature of Romero de Torres's painting. This work served as inspiration for the cover of the book "Un hombre extraño" written by José María Carretero, himself nicknamed "El caballero audaz". Julio Romero de Torres was born into an intellectual and artistic milieu, which was a decisive factor in favour of his vocation. His father, Rafael Romero de Barros, was also a painter and curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in Cordoba. Julio Romero began his training in 1884, combining classes at the Conservatory of Music with his father's drawing and painting classes. In 1890 he produced his first known work, "La huerta de Morales", and in 1895 he took part for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts with "Mira qué bonita era", a work which won him an honourable mention and was acquired by the State. In 1897 he competed for the Rome prize, although he did not win the scholarship, and in 1902 he began his teaching career at the Cordoba School of Fine Arts. The following year he moved to Madrid to gain first-hand knowledge of the mural painting of the Symbolists after receiving his first major commission, a series of murals dedicated to the arts for the Círculo de la Amista in Cordoba. In this project his work still shows the influence of Puvis de Chavannes. Julio Romero then remained in Madrid, in contact with the circle of Valle-Inclán and the Machados family, frequenting the gatherings of the Café de Levante while he matured his own style. In 1906 he sent "Vividoras del amor" to the Nacional, a work that was rejected because of its scandalous subject matter. In Madrid he made himself known through exhibitions such as the one at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in 1907, and the idea of a trip to Europe was maturing, which would mark a definitive change in his language, a clear desire for change. He continued to take part in the National Exhibitions, and in 1908 his work "The Gypsy Muse" was acquired by the State and won him his first medal. This triumph led to his paintings being sent to exhibitions held abroad, in Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. His definitive recognition came in 1910, when he was awarded the Order of Alfonso X the Wise and was appointed inspector of the royal delegation and curatorship at the Rome Art Exhibition. The following year he was awarded the gold medal at the National Fine Arts Competition in Barcelona, and shortly afterwards he was made a full member of the Academy of Sciences, Fine and Noble Arts of Cordoba. Julio Romero continued to live in Madrid, however, and from 1913 onwards he frequented the café Pombo. Two years later he was given a special room at the National Exhibition, and in 1916 he was appointed professor at the San Fernando Academy. During these years of success and recognition, his studio in Madrid's Calle Pelayo became the centre of gatherings and meetings. However, in 1928 he was forced to return to Cordoba for health reasons, although this did not prevent him from continuing to paint in his studio in the Plaza del Potro. Indeed, in 1930, the same year as his death, he took part in the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville with a total of twenty-eight paintings. Although, like many of his contemporaries, Julio Romero began his career with a regionalist style that evolved along the lines of Symbolism, the master reached the maturity of his personal style around 1912 with a language that combines Andalusian folk feeling and authentic Andalusian art.

JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES (Córdoba, 1874 - 1930) "Female portrait", 1900-1905. Pencil and charcoal on paper.

        Est: €25,000 - €27,000

JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES (Córdoba, 1874 - 1930) "Female portrait", 1900-1905. Pencil and charcoal on paper. Signed in the upper right corner. Measurements: 28 x 27 cm. 40.5 x 40.5 cm. (frame) The work corresponds to the portrait of a female figure from the short story "El Pecado de Claudina", published after winning the second prize in the literary contest of El Libro Popular. "El Pecado de Claudina" was written by José Reygadas and illustrated by Julio Romero de Torres, who made four drawings in addition to the one on the cover. The work was published on June 10, 1913, which allows us to date the creation of the work we present. Julio Romero de Torres was born in an intellectual and artistic environment, which decidedly favored his vocation. His father, Rafael Romero de Barros, was also a painter and curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in Cordoba. Julio Romero began his training in 1884, combining classes at the Conservatory of Music with his father's drawing and painting classes. In 1890 we find his first known work, "La huerta de Morales", and in 1895 he entered for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, with "Mira qué bonita era", a work that earned him an honorable mention and was acquired by the State. In 1897 he opted for the Rome prize, although he did not win the scholarship, and in 1902 he began his teaching career at the School of Fine Arts in Cordoba. The following year he moved to Madrid to learn first hand about the mural painting of the symbolists, after receiving his first major commission, a series of murals dedicated to the arts for the Círculo de la Amista de Córdoba. In this project his work still shows the influence of Puvis de Chavannes. Julio Romero then remained in Madrid, in contact with the circle of Valle-Inclán and Machado, frequenting the gatherings of the Café de Levante while maturing his own style. In 1906 he sent "Vividoras del amor" to the Nacional, a work that was rejected because of its scandalous theme. In Madrid he will become known through exhibitions such as the one at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in 1907, and he matures the idea of a trip to Europe that will mark a definitive change in his language, a clear desire for change. He continues to participate in the National Exhibitions, and in 1908 his work "The Gypsy Muse" is acquired by the State and earns him a first medal. This triumph will make that his paintings are sent to exhibitions held abroad, in Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. The definitive recognition came in 1910, when he was awarded the Order of Alfonso X the Wise and was appointed inspector of the delegation and royal commissariat at the Art Exhibition in Rome. The following year he was awarded the gold medal at the National Fine Arts of Barcelona, and shortly after he was appointed full member of the Academy of Sciences, Fine and Noble Arts of Cordoba. Julio Romero, however, continued to live in Madrid, frequenting the Café Pombo gathering since 1913. Two years later a special room was dedicated to him at the National Exhibition, and in 1916 he was appointed professor at the Academy of San Fernando. During these years of success and recognition, his studio, in Madrid's Pelayo Street, became the center of gatherings and meetings. However, in 1928 he was forced to return to Cordoba for health reasons, although this did not prevent him from continuing to paint in his studio in the Plaza del Potro. In fact, in 1930, the same year of his death, he participated in the Ibero-American Exposition of Seville with a total of twenty-eight paintings. Although, like many of his contemporaries, Julio Romero began his career cultivating a regionalist work that would evolve along the lines of symbolism, the master would reach the maturity of his personal style around 1912, with a language that combines the Andalusian popular feeling and authentic folklore with the Renaissance tradition of Italian art.

JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES (Cordoba, 1874 - 1930). "Arab looking at the sea", ca.1903. Oil on panel. Work registered in "The splendor of the dawn; Julio Romero de Torres", 2016 p.26. Signed and located in the lower left corner. Measurements: 22.5 x 13.5 cm; 42.5 x 33 cm (frame). In 1903, Julio Romero de Torres undertook a trip to Morocco with his brother Enrique Romero. Both explored the city which influenced Julio's painting, who dedicated several works inspired by orientalism, an example of this is his painting La Monta, Calle de Tánger, and this work where you can appreciate both the theme of oriental inspiration, as a type of loose brushstroke characteristic of the time. JULIO ROMERO DE TORRES (Cordoba, 1874 - 1930). "Portrait of Rafael Romero", circa 1917. Tempera and oil on canvas. Certificate of authenticity issued by Doña Mercedes Valverde Candil can be issued at the buyer's expense. Measurements: 35 x 33,5 cm; 53,5 x 48 cm (frame). Provenance: Private collection, St. Louis, Missouri. Jack Parker Fine Arts and Antiques, St. Louis, Missouri, until 1996. Philip and Stacey Backus Fine Art, Houston, Texas, until 2003. Private collection. Private collection, Madrid. A male portrait with pronounced features and a penetrating gaze which, despite its small size and the fact that little can be seen of the sitter, thanks to the colour and drawing, conveys a great intensity and expressiveness that captivates the viewer. The protagonist of the scene, wearing a Cordovan hat, is the son of the artist Rafael Romero Pellicer. This work is probably a study in expression by the artist, as he used this same composition in his 1917 painting "La Malagueña", which was exhibited at the Majestic Hall in 1919. It features Amalia the Gypsy, the artist's muse, and her son on the right-hand side of the composition, both portrayed full-length. In the present work, despite the similarities of the face and clothing with the painting mentioned above, there is less space between the face and the position of the hand, a characteristic which in "La Malagueña" is conditioned by the presence of the woman and the compositional harmony between the two figures in the scene. Julio Romero de Torres was born into an intellectual and artistic environment, a fact which strongly favoured his vocation. His father, Rafael Romero de Barros, was also a painter and curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Cordoba.
