PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A DISTINGUISHED FAMILY Fort Santiago signed and dated 1974 (lower right) oil on canvas 34" x 35 1/4" (86 cm x 90 cm) In 1974, Ibarra dela Rosa started his Fort Santiago series. Among the founding members of the Dimasalang Group of Artists who had promoted impressionism and figurative art during the height of modern art in the late 1960s through the 1970s, it only goes to show that this series (and the Intramuros series he began a year before) was characterized by vivid sensuous colors and Fauvist art style of strong colors and fierce brush strokes. This particular Fort Santiago, also created in 1974, heavily emphasized Dela Rosa’s whimsical color palette. He depicts the ruined walls of Fort Santiago not as the dilapidated structure it was left in after centuries of wear and tear but in shades of light pastel blue and pink that denote lively modern architecture. The artist's orchestration of color and the composition of the piece gives the work a vibrant, almost spring-like quality. Gone are the rundown walls of Fort Santiago; in its place are these bright-colored walls done in the Fauvist fashion, breathing in new life to the otherwise familiar place and transforming it into a dreamlike scenery. The brilliance that permeates his oeuvre remains the same throughout the years. He maintained much acclaim throughout his career, acquiring many followers and buyers in his lifetime. Two years before the creation of Fort Santiago, Dela Rosa was conferred the highly coveted Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. (Hannah Valiente)

He was notable for his highly impressionistic works that border on the surreal and his pointillist-like brushstrokes where blots of acrylic splashes on board, which he called “wipings,” that lends a pure abstract experience to the audience. His oeuvres may seem ever changing from period to period, but the allure culled from the vibrance and brilliance pervading the piece is always present. For that, he was regarded as the pioneer of meticulous Impressionism in the Philippine art landscape. Art as a potent medium to preserve the past rings true for Ibarra Dela Rosa. In an attempt to eternalize the glory of local historical landmarks, at least on his canvases, he created the Intramuros Series in 1973 and the Fort Santiago Series in 1974. And before his two famous series, there was the acrylic painting titled Right Side of San Agustin Church, dated in 1971. At the time of World War II, the San Agustin Church faced horrors and witnessed killings within its four walls during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. As a concentration camp, the Japanese troops removed the lower portion of the right front door of the church and placed sandbags on the resulting opening, turning the entrance into a makeshift machine gun post. In the 1970s, the monastery was rebuilt as a museum under the design of architect Angel Nakpil. In 1972, a year after this piece was made, Dela Rosa became a recipient of the highly coveted Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines.(P.I.R.)

He became one of the most prolific painters of his time due to his numerous followers and buyers. His first exhibition at the La Solidaridad Gallery in Manila was succeeded by more than sixty shows in the leading Philippine galleries of his time, such as Hidalgo, Quad, Kamalig, Luz, and Galerie Bleue. De la Rosa was a recipient of the highly coveted CCP Thirteen Artists Award and the Araw ng Maynila Award. Perhaps De la Rosa's most significant contribution to Philippine art is a captivating synthesis of the various elements of a typical landscape, such as forests and gardens. He weaves them into a magical brand of inherently impressionistic art that concurrently borders the surreal. His pointillist-like brushstrokes, which he called "wipings," is credited as his trademark technique. In this piece, De la Rosa evokes the Fauvists' radical application of unusual colors, breathing new life and concocting a unique emotional connection to landscape painting. He conveys untroubled moments of contemplation, inviting the viewer to indulge in pleasant reveries that are deeper than reality. The viewer's consciousness is engrossed in the varicolored, lush flora, transporting them towards a pure Elysian experience. De la Rosa's application of harmoniously cascading colors results in an opus that is universally appealing to art critics, collectors, and enthusiasts.
