Oil on canvas Hamburg/Germany 1823 Friedrich Rosenberg (1758-1833) - German landscape and marine painter Signed and dated lower right 'Rosenberg 1823’ Signed and dated with ‘Frie = Rosenberg 1823’ on the reverse Stretcher with notes of a former owner Dimensions: 60 x 77 cm Gilt ornate frame: 74.5 x 90.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Thuringia (since 1850 family owned) A work by the estimated landscape painter Friedrich Rosenberg, whose paintings are on display in major museum collections, including the Museum of Schwerin and the Kunsthalle in Hamburg; the current highest auction record for a similar painting by Rosenberg is circa €5,000 Condition: The painting shows some craquelure, minor paint flaking and a slightly discolored varnish due to age. On the right side there is a diagonal scratch with minor losses of color and a dent. There are encircling pressure marks caused by the stretcher. Inspection under UV light reveals some tiny areas of retouching to the right margin. The dimensions of the canvas are 60 x 77 cm, and the frame is 74.5 x 90.5 cm in size. Friedrich Rosenberg (1758-1833) The self-taught landscape and marine painter Friedrich Rosenberg went from Hamburg to Switzerland in 1778, where he made the acquaintance of Johann Heinrich Füssli, Salomon Gessner and Johann Caspar Lavater. Further journeys took him through Italy, France and Holland. In 1794, he settled in Hamburg. In Altona, he founded the ‘Altona Kunstausstellung’ along with Jes Bundsen and Anton Carl Dusch. Works by Friedrich Rosenberg are on display in important museum collections, including the Museum Schwerin and the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.
