Max Rosenthal (1833-1918) was a Polish-American Painter, Lithographer, Draftsman and Etcher. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and one of the founders of the Sketch Club. This fine quality Engraved Plate Proof measures 9" x 5.75" (image) on a 15.75" x 12" sheet of period wove art paper. Lightly toned in margins, overall excellent for display. Noted in text on the plate: "Twenty sets in four states of this plate printed and Subscribed for by..." Depicts General George Washington holding his sword in battle, an American Flag being held behind him. Below the image is a printed listing of his 20 initial Subscribers for this decorative plate, and "No. 20" (version) written in pencil just below. This Proof being after "GEORGE WASHINGTON AFTER THE BATTLE OF PRINCETON" by Charles Willson Peale, American, (1741-1827) Paited in 1783, Commissioned by the College of New Jersey for Nassau Hall, Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, New Jersey. While differing in composition from "George Washington at the Battle of Princeton," significant similarities remain. Peale unveiled this work in person during commencement at the College of New Jersey on September 29, 1784. Max Rosenthal (born in Turck, Kingdom of Poland, November 23rd, 1833; died August 8th, 1918) was a Polish-American painter, lithographer, draftsman and etcher. In 1847 he went to Paris, where he studied lithography, drawing, and painting with M. Thurwanger, with whom he came to Philadelphia in 1849, and completed his studies. He made the chromolithographic plates for what is believed to be the first fully illustrated book by this process in the United States, "Wild Scenes and Wild Hunters." In 1854 he drew and lithographed an interior view of the old Masonic temple in Philadelphia, the plate being 22 by 25 inches, the largest chromolithograph that had been made in the country up to that time. He designed and executed the illustrations for various works, and during the Civil War followed the Army of the Potomac, and drew every camp, up to the Battle of Gettysburg. These drawings he reproduced at the time. Up to 1884 he did miscellaneous works, including about 200 lithographs of distinguished Americans.

Exceptional George Washington Mezzotint Proof Artist Signed by Max Rosenthal

          Est: $600 - $900

Washington Related Exceptional George Washington Mezzotint Proof Portrait Artist Signed by “Max Rosenthal” of Boston c. 1880, Mezzotint Proof Portrait, George Washington, Artist Signed by “Max Rosenthal,” of Boston Pre-Publication, Choice Crisp Near Mint. Limited Edition Pre-Publication “Proof” Portrait of a young George Washington and we can see on the internet that they are right. This fine and elegant portrait of George Washington was created in mezzotint by the noted engraver Max Rosenthal (1833-1918) after the famous painting by Charles Wilson Peale. Rosenthal became a leading engraver of famous historical scenes and more than 150 portraits of eminent American and British individuals. The Portrait measures about 12” x 9 3/8” plus has original, fully wide ample margins. It has a remarque etched portrait of C.W. Peale in the lower left margin and it is numbered No. 75 and Signed in pencil “Max Rosenthal.” It is printed on chine applique and mounted on a fine quality sheet of heavy wove print paper. The backing sheet shows some minor discoloration, largely visible on the reverse and not affecting the image. Note: We located a later print, off this same plate, from an image on Google, but that impression is different and must have been produced later, as it has a printed title, and the publication date is 1895. The impression we are offering must be an original “Proof” produced before titles were added. Also, our current impression is Pencil Signed as we have noted, whereas the impression we saw with printed title is not pencil signed. Rosenthal apparently retired from his engraving career in 1884.
