ÉDOUARD ROSSET-GRANGER (Vincennes, France, 1853 - Paris, 1934) "Saleswoman of roses in Capri", 1887. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and dedicated in the lower right corner.

    Est: €11,000 - €15,000

ÉDOUARD ROSSET-GRANGER (Vincennes, France, 1853 - Paris, 1934) "Saleswoman of roses in Capri", 1887. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and dedicated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 110 x 72 cm; 127 x 90 cm (frame). Édouard Rosset-Granger presents us a work of great format, realized in Capri in 1887. The work is both decorative and of great pictorial quality. Painted during one of his frequent stays on the island of Capri, the painting can most probably be located on Capri, where the Dubufe family owned a villa. A young island girl, leaning against a low wall, her basket of roses resting on the edge of the wall, appears dreamy. A lower plane adds depth and highlights the relief of the magnificent Italian island. Édouard Rosset-Granger uses a light touch for the landscape and a more polished touch, highlighting fine details, for the figures. The palette presents a beautiful range of soft colors in pinks, beiges and whites, enhanced by the bright red of the scarf. Édouard Rosset-Granger, born in Vincennes and died in Paris, was a portraitist, landscape painter, pastelist, genre painter and illustrator. The natural son of Édouard Dubufe, Paul Édouard Rosset-Granger studied with Alexandre Cabanel, Édouard Dubufe and Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris. From 1878, he exhibited mythological themes and genre paintings at the Salon des artistes français, then at the Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts and at the Société des amis des arts in Bordeaux. He won several prizes at fairs. He was awarded the gold medal in the Decorative Arts section of the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition. Rosset-Granger was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1898. From 1906 to 1909, he participated in the decoration of the town hall of Saint-Mandé with Guillaume Dubufe, his half-brother, who had been his classmate at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1900, he participated in the decoration of the gilded salon of the restaurant Le Train bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris, with a decorative panel depicting Lake Bourget. At the end of the 19th century, Rosset-Granger worked in the Ternes district, in a workshop located at 5 rue Émile-Allez. In April 1902, he moved to his new workshop in the Plaine de Monceaux, at 45 avenue de Villiers. He made numerous trips to Brittany, Normandy and, above all, to Italy, in particular to Anacapri (island of Capri), where the family owned a villa.
