      Attr: Gaetano Rossi (b.1829, Italy) carved pure white marble sculpture of The Lely Venus, after the original 2nd Century Hellenistic period statue; the figure depicts the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Roman goddess, Venus). In the scene, the nude figure is bathing by the river, in a surprised moment she takes a crouching pose, as if in an attempt to cover herself; her head looks to her right, her right arm is drawn across her body to cover her chest and her left arm rests on her knee with her hand shadowing over her lap, and a large seashell is carved below her. Inscribed signature reads “G.no Rossi”, in excellent condition with no damage to the hands and fingers, has a small ding in the lower back of the figure. 21.5 in. high x 10.5 in. wide x 6.5 in. deep. Weight: 54.25 lbs.
