          Harry Rountree (1878-1950) ''SAFE HANDS'', SPORTING DOC. [DUNCAN MACRAE, SCOTTISH & BRITISH LIONS RUGBY PLAYER] signed, watercolour & crayon. 38 by 27cm., framed & glazed Duncan Macrae (1914-2007) studied medicine at St Andrews University and is depicted by Rountree on the rugby pitch carrying a doctor's bag and newborn triplets. Macrae practiced as a doctor for 30 years in Dingwall in the Highlands. The centre played nine times for Scotland and toured with 1939 British Lions to South Africa. He also toured with the Barbarians. Macrae's rugby career ended with the outbreak of World War Two when he joined the 51st Highland Division serving as a medical officer. He was captured Prisoner of War at the Battle of Saint-Valery-en-Caux in Normandy in June 1940, and volunteered to serve as a medical officer at Stalag VIII-B, Lamsdorf, Upper Silesia. In his later life he served as President of Ross Sutherland RFC.

A struggling commercial artist for many years, he was finally given a commission with an animal – and leapt at the chance much like this fish leaps at its lure. New Zealand is famed for its swordfish: a record (for the region) 815-lb monster was caught in 2015. (New Zealand)

          HARRY ROUNTREE (1878-1950) NEW ZEALAND / THE SPORTSMAN'S PARADISE. Circa 1920s. 36x26 inches, 91 1/2x66 cm. Coulls Somerville Wilkie Limited, Dunedin. Condition B+: replaced losses in margins; repaired tear in top right image and text. Framed. New Zealand actively promoted her natural resources as "The Sportsman's Paradise." Not only were hiking, skiing and camping advertised, but "to further attract sports-minded tourists and stimulate hotel demand, the Tourist Department imported a wide range of game, including red deer, wapiti, salmon, chamois and tahr. Moose were introduced to Fiordland . . . while fisherman sought marlin and other big game in the Bay of Islands" (New Zealand p. 243). This image appeared in a series of poster stamps published in the mid 1930s and also on a 2013, 70 cent New Zealand postage stamp, as part of a series of twenty "Classic Travel Posters." rare. New Zealand p. 85 (var).

          Harry Rountree (1878-1950) TREGENNA: SHORT COURSE - SHORT "PRO" - BOTH GOOD signed & titled, watercolour & crayon, heightened with gouache, 39.5 by 25.5cm., 15 1/2 by 10in., framed & glazed; sold together with a scanned reproduction photograph of Reginald Coller (2) The Tregenna Golf Club professional featured by Rountree is Reginald Charles Coller, from whom Rountree received golf lessons whist he was at St Ives in Cornwall. Coller was the first professional at Tregenna when it opened as a 9-hole course in 1929. Coller holds the course record there of 22 strokes which will never be beaten as it converted to a par 60 18-hole course in 1983. In the golfing world, Harry Rountree is fondly remembered for his acclaimed illustrations in Bernard Darwin's 1910 publication The Golf Courses of the British Isles.
