Painting measures 22 inches high, 26 inches wide. Frame measures 28.7 inches high, 32.6 inches wide. In good condition. From AskArt: A WPA artist, Walter Rousseff was a painter who also did murals for Michigan post offices, having earned these commissions in a major competition of the Post Office Department Building in Washington DC. Rousseff was born in Bulgaria, settled in Chicago, and also had a studio in Iron Mountain, a small Michigan town. For the new Iron Mountain, Michigan post office, dedicated in 1935, he completed five murals that are inside the lobby. Most of his mural paintings had western themes with titles including Moving West, Washing, Carrying Gold, Watching an Early Train, Stage Coach, Ferry Boat, and Fight with Indians. Of his mural work, it was written: "Although many government artists had difficulty relating their murals to the architecture of the building, Rousseff successfully overcame this problem by unifying the separate murals through a common color scheme that was harmonious with the interior tones of the building; he also linked them by an overall theme. The paintings also complemented the building through internal elements of the composition".
