Provenance: Neffe-Degandt Fine Art, London (label verso); Jill Newhouse, New York (label verso); Private Collection In this sensitive chalk and charcoal sketch of a seated nude, Roussel shows the knowledge of anatomy he had learned at the École des Beaux-Arts, and also from life-drawing classes at the Academie Julian. The woman is seen from the back, legs drawn up. The curvature of her spine is the focus of Roussel's drawing; her face is in shadow. This relaxed, informal drawing was in fact a study for a 1908 painting by Roussel, Venus and Love at the Seaside, now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. The painting depicts a nude woman on a beach near Saint-Tropez. She is seated beside Cupid, who holds a blackbird. A painter associated with Les Nabis, from his teenage years Francois Xavier Roussel was a close friend of Édouard Vuillard, whose sister Marie he married. In 1888, Roussel enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and also studied at the Académie Julian. Eleven years later, he, along with Pierre Bonnard and Vuillard, travelled to Italy; he later settled in Yvelines, where he painted mythological and classical subjects in a broadly Post-Impressionist style. During WWI, Roussel suffered from clinical depression, but in the years following created large-scale murals, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and other public buildings. Ker-Xavier Roussel (French, 1867-1944) impressionist oil on canvas painting of nudes in a river landscape setting titled "Baigneuses" (Bathers), unsigned. Circa 1906-1907. - Roussel is best known as a member of Les Nabis, an influential and cult-like group of artists that also included Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis and Paul Serusier. Although there was no unified Nabis style, the artists emphasized the flatness of the painting surface by using simplified areas of color and patterned design. - According to Nicolas Langlois, Roussel's great grandson and a leading authority on his work, the painting was executed circa 1906/1907, during or after Roussel's visit with Maurice Denis in St. Tropez. Langlois knows of eight versions of this scene, one of which, "Ete en Mediterranee," is illustrated in Lucie Cousturier, "Ker Xavier Roussel," (1927), p. 44 and subsequently sold at Sotheby's (London) in 2011. - Provenance: This painting was in the collection of Pierre Bonnard at the time of Bonnard's death in 1947. It was subsequently transferred to the Galerie Louis Carre in Paris (label verso), and then sold at auction with other artwork from the Bonnard collection in 1954 at the Galerie Charpentier. The buyer was a young woman named Patti Cadby Birch who eventually became a major collector and a trustee of both MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The painting was acquired directly from Birch's estate. - English translation for letter (See photos): "We, the undersigned, Nicolas Langlois and Jacques Roussel, great-grandchildren of Ker Xavier Roussel, hereby certify that the work reproduced on the reverse side, the Heine Institute's version of "Ete en Mediterranee", measuring 128cm x 162cm, is the work of K X Roussel. ***** In Paris, February 3, 2014". - [49 1/2" H x 63" W]. Roussel (1867-1944) studied at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris alongside his friend and fellow artist Édouard Vuillard. In 1888, he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts, and soon began frequenting the Académie Julian, Paris, where Maurice Denis and other students formed the group Les Nabis. In 1899, Roussel, Vuillard, and another close artist friend, Pierre Bonnard, traveled to Lake Como, Venice and Milan. Later that year he settled in L'Étang-la-Ville, Yvelines, and the subject-matter of his paintings veered towards rural landscapes. He drew his subject matter from the area around L'Étang-la-Ville and Saint-Tropez, adapting the scenery to Greek mythological episodes depicting women, children, nymphs, centaurs and fauns. He abandoned the small format pictures typical of the Nabis and created large, brightly coloured paintings in a Post Impressionist style. His paintings celebrated the seasons, abundance, drunkenness, lustful behaviour and dance, the latter influenced by none other than Isadora Duncan.
