        Lot of 8 nautical charts from an atlas of 12 large plates of the Mediterranean, depicting ports, fortifications and cities of the entire Mediterranean coast, including the coasts of Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and others. Engraving and etching, ca. 630 x 830 mm each sheet. Printed on heavy laid paper. The sheets are in fair condition, with stains, wear and tears along the edges, in addition to the usual vertical folds. Provenance: Vecchia Marina Antiquariato Navale, Roma

(Marseille, Jean Allezard, um 1770). -- Umfangreiches Fragment von 67 gestochenen kleinformatigen Portolankarten der relevanten Häfen des Mittelmeeraums, vermutlich aus dem Atlas von Joseph Roux. Das Titelblatt fehlt, das Blatt "Index" mit der Überschrift "Table de 67 plans des ports et rades de la mer mediterranée, contenus dans ce recueil". – Das Blatt "Inhalt" und die ca. zehn ersten Karten etwas stärker fleckig und mit Wasserrand, die beiden ersten Karten stärker betroffen, die erste Karte auch mit modernem Tinteneintrag. Die letzten fünfzehn Karten mit größerem Feuchtigkeitsrand. Sonst mal mehr, mal weniger gebräunt und fingerfleckig.

Carte uniformemente brunite, un restauro al verso della tavola V, strappi marginali ad alcune tavole, di cui uno strappo all'ultima ma opera arricchita dalla presenza di 2 carte aggiuntive rispetto all'edizione: la Carte du Golfe de Lyon (Marseille, 1771) e la Carte particuliere del costes de Provence (Marseille 1770), legate in fine. Legatura coeva in pieno cartonato rustico. Gravi difetti ai piatti. (1)

Engraved title, an unnumbered folding plate, 179 numbered plates, one plate from another edition (1833), index table (title and some other leaves reinforced, restoration to the first folding leaf, slight dampstain at the lower right margin that causes some small loss, index and title more heavilly affected, almost imperceptible wormhole between plates 150 and 161). Binding of the first half of the 19th-century backed in leather, title and decorations in gold and blind (some chipping to marbled paper covers).         Oblong 4to: engr. title, 121 pl., table of contents at the end (tiny perforation without loss in upper corner on several lvs, pencil notes on flylvs, sl. browned). - 1st ed. of this atlas with nautical charts extracted from a folio of 12 Mediterranean charts by the "Hydrographe du Roi" Joseph Roux (1725-1793), founder of the Roux Family of Marseilles which became specialists in painted pictures of ships. Copies of these charts were used for a number of years after their publication on Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory in 1803 and 1805, as well as on HMS Shannon. Engr. by Laurent. - Ref. Una lieve gora d'acqua con arrossature nell'angolo superiore delle carte e qualche sporadica fioritura sparsa ma ottima copia. Legatura coeva in piena pelle maculata con cornice di fregi fogliati impressa a secco ai piatti. Abrasioni ai piatti e cerniere un po' lise. Legacci conservati.

Wear to extremities, but a tight binding. Interesting engraving pasted with a read seal inside front board beeing an advertising for "Joseph Roux and fils".. creating all kinds of instruments of mathematics and navigation. They are situated "Sur le Port de Marseille." Contemporary names in margin and recto on the title page and recto two other maps/plans. A small number of plates mildly browned, occasional rare spots. Several plans printed on thicker blue toned paper. Engraved title page (Laurent inv./sculp.) + 121 plans/maps of ports in the Mediterranean. A very good copy!
