      William Rowe (American 1910-1955) TAXCO MARKET, MEXICO circa 1935 bearing remnants of two paper labels on the reverse: Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, Lending Library and Carl Bredemeier Gallery, Buffalo (Oltd Market, William Rowe) oil on canvas 24 by 30 in. Exhibitions: Buffalo Museum of Art, Buffalo, NY Rochester Memorial Art Gallery Other Notes: William B. Rowe was born in Chicago in 1910, in 1913 his family moved to Buffalo. Upon graduation from Cornell, he secured a commission to design a 100-foot mural for Bennett High School in Buffalo. Completed in 1935, extant and in situ, "New World Symphony" is a commentary on American folk inspiration on American music. The mural brought Rowe to the attention of Gordon Washburn, the Director of Buffalo's Federal Works of Art Program and Director of the Albright Gallery, later to become Albright Knox Gallery. Washburn granted Rowe another commission for a mural for the Nurses' Residence of The Marine Hospital which served Merchant Marines. This large work was titled "Old Buffalo of the Elegant Eighties or Nifty Nineties" and "Buffalo and the Gay 90's." Rowe founded a cooperative artist's studio, he was the President of The Art Institute of Buffalo and he exhibited regularly at the Albright. In the early 1950's he settled in New Mexico and began working with Andrew Dasburg, an influential colleague. He died in Taos at the young age of 45. Museums with his work in their permanent collection include: the Smithsonian Institute, the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, the Albright Knox Gallery, the Syracuse Museum of Fine Art and the Art Institute of Buffalo.
