Unframed, loose and not glued or mounted. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. (15 5/8 x 10 3/8 in.) Provenance Property from a Private London Collection. Thomas Rowlandson, son of a wool and silk merchant, studied at the Royal Academy Schools between 1772 and 1778 where he developed his skills as a draughtsman. His work is unique for a Royal Academy student as he chose never to work with oils and instead chose to produce sketches and etchings. His works are heavily infulenced by French artistic practice, and he began to work in watercolour from 1773.

Thomas Rowlandson, English, 1756 to 1827, an original hand colored engraving on paper, Chow Time. Signed in the plate, lower right. Circa: 18th century. Framed. Thomas Rowlandson was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker, Rowlandson produced both individual social and political satires, as well as a large number of illustrations for novels, humorous books, and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of his age such as James Gillray, his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. Rowlandson also produced highly explicit erotica for a private clientele; this was never published publicly at the time and is now only found in a small number of collections. His caricatures included those of people in power such as the Duchess of Devonshire, William Pitt the Younger and Napoleon Bonaparte. Antique English British Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
