JAMINI ROY (1887-1972) "UNTITLED" OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED BOTTOM RIGHT Size: 31.3x24 inches French Private Collection  Footnotes: Born in Beliatore, West Bengal, Jamini Roy, an artistic luminary, commenced his creative journey at the Calcutta College of Art. Initially ensconced in a western academic style, he fervently embraced Post-Impressionism, a period marked by his artistic evolution. However, a transformative shift occurred in 1925, as Roy, driven by a profouhend quest for cultural authenticity, delved into traditional Bengali art. Embracing the ethos of folk painters, known as patuas, renowned for illustrating deities and legends, Roy's oeuvre underwent a remarkable metamorphosis.Venturing beyond the confines of conventional artistic expression, Roy ingeniously incorporated Christian themes into his later works. The 1930s witnessed the establishment of his workshop, a collaborative space where apprentices actively contributed to crafting images using a predefined set of motifs. Roy's visionary endeavour aimed at democratizing art, rendering it accessible to diverse strata of society, challenging the traditional notion of the solitary creative genius. In this pursuit, he shared common ground with Western luminaries like Andy Warhol, both envisioning art as an inclusive and participatory endeavour that transcends individual authorship. Jamini Roy's legacy endures as a testament to his indelible imprint on the democratization and diversification of artistic expression.

Jamini Roy (1887-1972) Blue Nude signed in Bengali (lower right) tempera on canvas 59 x 40.5cm Provenance: Collection of Humphry House, acquired in Calcutta, 1936 thence by descent within the family Born in Beliatore, Bengal, Jamini Roy was an Indian artist whose work fused tradition with modernity, drawing inspiration from folk art to create a unique visual language. He is today celebrated as one of the most significant and diverse modernists of Indian art. Roy received his early training at the Government College of Art, Kolkata, where he followed a Western inspired syllabus. After obtaining his diploma in 1916, he began a career as a portraitist. From 1920, however, amidst a surge in nationalism, Roy dramatically abandoned his early academic style in favour of a more indigenous approach, influenced by the flat colours, graphic lines and stylised forms of Kalighat Patua art. Synthesising elements of traditional folk art with his own artistic sensibilities, Roy created a visual language that was both accessible and profound. During the early 1920s, working in what he called his ‘flat-technique’, Roy’s subjects were mostly women from the nearby Santal tribe. From the mid-1920s, he began creating his calligraphic works which depicted scenes of every day life, including seated figures, crawling infants and local wildlife. Although he is perhaps best-known for these works, Roy also included mythological figures and religious iconography amongst his diverse cast of subjects and motifs. Throughout his career, Roy remained steadfast in his commitment to democratising art. Rejecting elitism and championing accessibility, he believed that the transformative power of art to uplift and inspire should be available for all, across class and cultural barriers. Not only were his subjects largely plucked from the everyday, but by the end of the 1920s, he abandoned the European convention of oils and began making his own mineral and vegetable pigments from local sources. Highly decorated, in 1934 Roy received a Viceroy's gold medal and in 1955 was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government - the third highest award a civilian can be granted. In 1956, he was made the second Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi - the highest honour in the fine arts conferred by the Lalit Kala Akademi, India's National Academy of Art, Government of India. Today, Roy's legacy lives on through his artworks which continue to resonate with audiences worldwide, celebrating India's rich cultural heritage and the universal language of art.

          Est: $7,000 - $10,000

Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) "Chowkidar" (Watchman) tempera on paperboard signed lower right, verso with "Galerie Moderne, Brentano's, New York". Glazed and framed. 25" x 13-1/2", framed 30" x 18" Provenance: Galerie Moderne at Brentano's, New York, New York; Collection of Gladys Freeman Cahn (1901-1964), New Orleans, Louisiana; Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: Born into a prosperous Bengali family, Jamini Roy was taught drawing and painting in the Classical Western style. Early in his career, he painted portraits, but soon realized that he needed to develop his own style, one that would draw inspiration and payed homage to his own culture. He was influenced by tribal and folk art, particularly Kalighat Pat (Kalighat painting), a linear style of painting utilizing bold, vibrant colors. He strived to capture the life of folk people, make art accessible to the wider audiences and to give Indian art its own identity. Roy combined folk art, utilizing indigenous materials such as mill-made paper and vegetable-based pigments, with his European training, creating something new and spearheading Indian modern art movement. India's Cultural Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch described the artist: "Jamini Roy's contribution in the growth and shaping of modern Indian art is well-established and enormously significant. His artworks have a particular appeal in the popular imagination because of their strong, simple forms and vibrant colours..." "The Watchman" is an embodiment of Roy's style. Chowkidar translates into the guardian of the public space or crossroads called the chowk. Chowkidars can perform duties that are often considered the most dehumanizing, such as serving the rich by standing at their gates. Figures of the Guardians can also be seen carved in stone reliefs on Hindu temples, as protectors of the edifices. Residents of Dev Mogra village revere "Devdarvaniya Chowkidar" who according to the folklore has been guarding their villages and the temple to Goddess Pandori Maata for centuries. Jamini Roy's "Chowkidar" is not treated as a lowly gate keeper or a guard, but as a revered figure, his large body dominating the frame, his almond eyes staring defiantly at the viewer.
