CONTACT US SKU#: 123787 US Shipping $49 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Lionel Royer was born in Chateau-du-Loir in Sarthe on December 25, 1852. He volunteered before his 18th birthday for the Franco-Prussian War and took part in the Battle of Loigny-Poupry on December 2, 1870 under the command of General Athanase de Charrette de la Contrie. Contrie, having noticed Royer's artistic talent, offered to finance his studies at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.Royer became a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel and of William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He obtained the Prix de Rome in 1882. He became a portraitist and, especially, a painter of historical scenes. His best-known works are Vercingetorix Throwing his Weapons at the Feet of Caesar (1899), and the decoration of the Basilica of Domremy dedicated to Joan of Arc. In illustrated supplements of newspapers of the era, he was a commentator on current affairs, in particular supplying drawings of Alfred Dreyfus in his prison or Auguste Comte and his three muses.

There are some scuff marks and cracks to the frame. Regarding the work itself, there is a crack running horizontally in the upper left hand corner (approx 6cm long). Below this is a hole in the piece, surrounded by marks, this hole has been touched up. Under UV it is evident the work has had some minor restoration,. It also shows that there are several scuff marks to the surface. Overall the piece is in fair condition.

Delacroix, Ingres ou Devéria, pour ne citer que les plus célèbres, se prêtent au jeu de la représentation des deux amants maudits. Mais c'est bien plutôt chez Ary Scheffer, que Lionel Royer trouve son inspiration. En effet, comme son aîné romantique, notre artiste dépeint le moment, dans un élan éminemment symboliste, où les deux héros viennent d'être assassinés et entrent dans les enfers. Cette nouvelle représentation mystique et spirituelle de la légende par Scheffer, en opposition aux toiles troubadours des maîtres précédemment cités, connut un succès populaire immense, et continua à influencer longtemps les jeunes artistes à sa suite, parmi lesquels nous retrouvons Lionel Royer et notre toile, assurément l'une de ses plus remarquables. Lionel Royer nahm an der Loigny-Schlacht teil und fiel dem Kommandanten, General de Charette als guter Zeichner auf, der Royer zu einem Stipendium der Beaux-Arts verhalf. Dazu von General Baron Athanase de Charette de la Contrie (1831 - 1911) eine persönlich gewidmete Ausgabe von "Souvenir du Régiment des Zouaves Pontificaux / Rome 1860 - 1870 / France 1870 - 1871", Band 1, 1875. Bordeauxroter Einband mit geprägtem Wappen Pius XI. sowie der Castelfidardo- und Mentana-Medaille (1867 von Pius XI für die Pontifikalen Truppen eingeführt). Auf dem Vorsatzblatt Tintenwidmung de Charrettes "A Monsieur Bichler(?) Souvenir de la nuit de Loigny - A. de Charette". Leicht beschädigt, stockfleckig. De Charette war Hauptmann der deutsch-belgischen Freiwilligen der pontifikalen Armee. Nach seiner Verwundung 1860 in Castelfidardo wurde er 1867 Oberstleutnant und war Befehlshaber während der Schlacht von Mentana. 1870 wurde er Kommandant der Légion des Volontaires de l'Ouest und befehligte diese gegen die Preußen in der Schlacht von Loigny-Pourpry die am 2. Dezember 1870 stattfand und in der insgesamt 9.000 Soldaten fielen. 1871 wurde er Brigadegeneral. Lionel Royer (1852 - 1926) Painting, oil on canvas and stretcher. Craquelure (one hole), signs of age. 81.5 x 54.5 cm. Lionel Royer took part in the Battle of Loigny. His drawing skills were discovered by his commanding general de Charette, who helped Royer obtain a grant to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. With a copy of the book "Souvenir du Régiment des Zouaves Pontificaux / Rome 1860-1870 / France 1870-1871", vol. 1, with a personal dedication of General Baron Athanase de Charette de la Contrie (1831-1911). Dark red cover with the embossed coat of arms of Pius XI as well as the Castelfidardo Medal and Cross of Mentana (introduced to the Papal troops in 1867). On the flyleaf an ink dedication of de Charrette reading "A Monsieur Bichler(?) Souvenir de la nuit de Loigny - A. de Charette". Slightly foxed and damaged. De Charette was a captain with the German-Belgian Volunteers of the Papal Army. He was wounded in Castelfidardo in 1860, promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1867, and served as commander in the Battle of Mentana. In 1870 he became the commander of the Légion des Volontaires de l'Ouest, leading his troops against Prussia in the Battle of Loigny-Pourpry on 2 December 1870, in which a total of 9,000 men died. He was promoted to Brigadier in 1871.

Antique ivory polychromed and carved frame. Reference: Bénézit. Royer studied with Bouguereau. — Bendann’s art gallery was established after the Civil War. The Bendann family made many cultural and philanthropic contributions to the city of Baltimore, including the formation of the Baltimore Museum of Art.
