Peter Paul Rubens Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Engraver, b. 1577 - d. 1640

Petrus Paulus Rubens was a man and an artist full of contradictions. Flemish by birth, he served 17th century monarchs from both British and Spanish courts as a painter and diplomat. Petrus Paulus Rubens' paintings often reflected his Catholic leanings and his humanitarian upbringing.

Hallmarks of Petrus Paulus Rubens' artwork include complex figure groupings and working on large pieces. The term Rubenesque developed from his depictions of fleshy, curvaceous women. Roman Catholic churches, as well as many members of Europe's royalty, commissioned Petrus Paulus Rubens' paintings.

Like other artists of his time, Petrus Paulus Rubens' drawings were preparatory work for his paintings. They cover a wide variety of subjects, including adult nobles, children, animals, and landscapes. Their richness and attention to detail make them works of art in their own right. Consider some of the many fine portrait paintings for sale or at auction to add to your art display.

(29 1/8 x 24 in.) Provenance Rev Isaac Mills, Rector of Highclere, Hampshire Gifted to his son, William Milles, brother of Jeremiah Milles (President of the Society of Antiquaries and Dean of Exeter between 1762 and 1784), thence by family decent. Sir Peter Paul Rubens, renowned for his large, dynamic compositions, and mastery of light and colour. His work is characterised by vibrant movement, sensuality, and dramatic intensity, which set him apart as one of the most important figures of the Baroque period. The overall style and type displayed a well-observed copy of the original which is currently held by the National Gallery of Australia, Kamberri/Canberra, purchased 1983. The treatment of light and the overall handling reveals an advanced understanding of Rubens masterly handling of portraiture. Rev. Isaac Milles, who served as the rector of Highclere in Hampshire for 39 years was deeply committed to his parish, education, and charitable works, and during his tenure, he developed a close relationship with Sir Robert Sawyer, the then-owner of Highclere. Sawyer was the Attorney General to Charles II and James II.

  • PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING AFTER PETER PAUL RUBENS SIGNED
    Mar. 29, 2025

PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING AFTER PETER PAUL RUBENS SIGNED

    Est: $100 - $150

An oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of a couple after the original oil painting on canvas, Self portrait with Isabella Brant, c. 1609 to 1610, by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, 1577 to 1640. Signed by the artist, lower right. Directly after his return from Italy, the 32 year old Rubens married the 18 year old Isabella Brant. This double portrait, which broke new ground in portrait painting, was purportedly done shortly thereafter. Rubens did not however give up using traditional symbolism: Honeysuckle was a well known symbol for faithfulness and hands laid over one another have symbolized matrimony since ancient times. However these references are integrated into this snapshot-like scene in which middle class contentedness, substantial affluence and strong affection are expressed. Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubenss highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. One of a kind artwork.

Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Antwerp 1640) circle of, Saint Catherine of Alexandria

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Oil on canvas, 129.5 x 94 cm. Century The work is based on the painting by Peter Paul Rubens and engraved by Schelte von Bolswert. Rubens, known as "the Prince of the Baroque", was the great master who revolutionised both Flemish and European painting. His early training came from the masters Otto van Veen and Jan Brueghel the Elder. His trip to Italy, where he stayed, studied and painted for eight years, was fundamental to his artistic growth. His first stop was Venice, where Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto studied. He later came into contact with Vincenzo I Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, becoming the family's court painter, a position he held until the end of his stay in Italy. In Mantua, Rubens had the opportunity to closely and assiduously study the rich ducal collection. By making copies of several famous paintings, he was able to practise technically on the examples of the great masters. In 1601 he was sent by the Duke to Rome, where he was able to broaden his figurative horizons even further by copying the models of Michelangelo and Raphael and by studying antiquity, also focusing on the contemporary artistic production of Carracci, Caravaggio and Federico Barocci. After leaving Italy, he settled in Antwerp, where he set up his workshop, applying the methods of organised production, that is, employing his collaborators on the basis of rational criteria and individual specialisations. Among the numerous painters who came out of Rubens's workshop or who were strongly influenced by the master, we remember: Cornelis and Paul de Vos, Jacob Jordaens, Pieter Van Mol, Victor Wolvoet, Joanna Vergouwen, Jan Boeckhorst known as Lange Jan, Lucas Van Uden, Theodor Van Thulden, Peter Van Lint, Willem Van Harp, Vincent Adrianssen, Pieter Van Avont, Jan and Hendrick van Balen, Theodor Boeyemans or Boeijermans, Vincent Malò, Gerard Segher Gaspar de Crayer and Abraham Willemsens.

After Sir Peter Paul Rubens,  Flemish 1577-1640-  The Visitation;  oil on copper, 57 x 73.5 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 23 April 2023, lot 94 (as 'Circle of Willem van Herp the Elder').  where purchased by the current owner.  Note:  The present composition is after an original formulation by Rubens, which the artist returned to repeatedly over the course of his career, initially in the left wing of the triptych which he painted for the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, in 1612-14. This slightly more cropped version was later expanded in an oil sketch by Rubens from 1632-34, which is now held in the National Gallery of Prague [DO 4602], which relates more closely to the present painting. This later version was also worked into various prints by engravers such as Pieter II de Jode (1606-1674), in a reversed format.

  • Pieter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Anversa 1640) bottega/allievo del XVII secolo

Pieter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Anversa 1640) bottega/allievo del XVII secolo

    Est: €1,400 - €2,500

Pieter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Antwerp 1640) 17th-century workshop/pupil of Roman Charity Oil on canvas 82 x 116 cm Frame: carved and gilded wood, decoration with alternating palmettes and shells, Central Italy, 17th century. This artwork refers to the painting of "Cimone and Pero (Caritas Romana)" by Rubens, kept in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam or the version in the Siegerlandes Museum in Siegen.
