      ALBERT RUBIN Sofia, Bulgaria 1887 - 1956 Bulgarian/French Albert Rubin, born in Sofia, Bulgaria, 1887-1956. His parents initially sent him to study carpentry but his artistic talents were revealed in the wood carvings he made in his spare time. He was sent to the art academy in Sofia. In 1905, after winning a contest sponsored by Boris Schatz, founder of the Bezalel School of Arts & Crafts, he travelled to the Land of Israel to study at the school. After returning to Bulgaria, he was accepted to the Beaux-Arts in Paris where he continued to study under Fernand Cormon. He was accepted to the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1914.He became a French citizen in 1927, exhibited widely and worked as a graphic artist. In 1931, he lost an eye in an accident but continued to paint, achieving renown for his unique style of portraiture. In 1933, he married and had two children. In May 1956, he was killed in a traffic accident at the age of 68. Rubin worked in pen and ink, pastel and oils. The Port oil on board signed lower right 38.5 x 53 cm good condition Provenance: The collection of Uri and Rami Nehostan, the Art Museum in Ashdot Yaacov, Israel.
