The precise contours of the drawing grotesquely reveal the dancer’s massive legs and hips, the silhouette of her figure in a bathing suit with tails, an almost open chest and a pretty face under a colorful hat. This whole paradoxical symbiosis of personalities could only happen in the elusive interior of the variety show’s offices, where the artist hints at the doorway with curtains, the opposite wall, the stove and the shadow of the gatekeeper. A colorful sketch with a touch of irony and criticism from the everyday life of a variety show, where one of the competitive dancers is caught by the artist while addressing a couple at a table. The artist masterfully manages to present the grotesque eroticism of the heroine and the contrasting elegance of the couple; the quaint atmosphere of smoky rooms. In a few spots of blue, white and black pastels, the outlines of the walls and reality are lost. Konstantin Ivanovich Rudakov (1891 - 1949), black chalk on paper drawing, an illustration for the novel of Guy de Maupassant depicting a standing nude woman wearing shoes. Apparently unsigned. Konstantin Ivanovich Rudakov was a Russian graphic artist and watercolorist. Author of color lithographs and watercolors for numerous literary works. Studied at the Academy of Arts (1913 - 1922) under D.N. Kardovsky, studied in the private studio of V.E. Savinsky, for some time also visited the New Art Workshop, where taught B. M. Kustodiev, E. E. Lansere, M. V. Dobuzhinsky. With illustrations of the novels by E. Zola and Guy de Maupassant, Rudakov entered the history of book graphics, although his works for the works of Russian classics are no less famous - "Eugene Onegin" (1934), L. N. Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace" (1941 - 1948).

Provenance: Collection Thun Hohenstein, stamp on the back In the depiction of the eminent Russian painter, graphic artist and stage designer Konstantin Ivanovich Rudakov we see in the center a vaudeville lady dressed in blue, followed by a few gentlemen in fine suits and with cylinder hats. Characteristic of Rudakov‘s paintings are the color accents quickly set here with powdery pastel crayons and the striking, drawn with ink outlines of people and objects. In his works he illustrated members of all social classes of his time and especially those of the nightlife - similar to the French impressionist Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Rudakov was therefore posthumously exhibited at the Tretyacov Gallery. Moscow, referred to him as the „Russian Toulouse-Lautrec“. Rudakov studied in the private studio of W. J. Savinsky and under Boris Michailowitsch Kustodijew, later at the Academy [possibly New Art College, St. Petersburg (Leningrad)] under Dmitry Kardovsky 1914-1922 and worked, among other things, as an illustrator for French writers. | Konstantin Ivanovich Rudakov (St. Petersburg 1891 - 1949) Mischtechnik auf Papier, 37,5 x 26 cm, signiert links unten, gerahmt Provenienz: Sammlung Thun Hohenstein, Stempel auf der Rückseite. Auf der Darstellung des bedeutenden russischen Malers, Graphikers und Bühnenbildners Konstantin Ivanovich Rudakov ist in der Bildmitte eine blau gekleidete Varieté-Dame zu sehen, gefolgt von ein paar Herren in feinen Anzügen und Zylinder-Hüten. Charakteristisch für Rudakovs Malweise sind die hier rasch mit pudriger Pastellkreide gesetzten Farbakzente und die markanten, mit Tusche gezogenen Umrisse von Personen und Gegenständen. In seinen Werken illustrierte er Mitglieder aller Gesellschaftsschichten seiner Zeit und insbesondere die des Nachtlebens – ähnlich wie der französischen Impressionisten Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Rudakov wurde daher posthum bei einer Ausstellung der Tretyacov Galerie, Moskau, als der „russische Toulouse-Lautrec“ bezeichnet. Rudakov studierte im privaten Atelier von W. J.
