        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

RUDAUX HENRI EDMOND (France, 1870-1927). "The Toast". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. It has slight lack of polychromy in the frame. Measurements: 60 x 48 cm; 89 x 79 cm (frame). A young woman, sumptuously dressed in festive attire, with her eighteenth-century-style powdered headdress, raises her glass of champagne to make a toast with someone who is out of the picture. Her smiling expression and faded gaze let us guess that this is not the first glass of the night, and the mask on the floor next to some fallen flowers warns us that the costume party is almost over. The juicy variety of qualities of the garments and objects on the white tablecloth is particularly noteworthy: the transparency of the glass, the flowers, the prints on the dress and the cottony fur of the scarf on the chair... The painter's talent for capturing every detail with a precious technique is evident in this painting. A French artist, Henri Edmond Rudaux painted genre scenes, portraits and marine scenes. He was also an illustrator. He studied with his father, Edmond Adolphe Rudaux, and two other French masters, Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre. Rudaux exhibited in the top galleries in France and received an honourable mention in 1897 at the prestigious Paris Salon. He is listed as a member of the Society of French Artists.

        Jun. 23, 2019

        Benz : Maquette. 1911.

        Est: $8,000 - $10,000

ARTIST: HENRI EDMOND RUDAUX (1870-1927) SIZE: 31 3/8 x 15 1/4 in./79.7 x 38.8 cm DESCRIPTION: Rudaux creates another delightful maquette, this time for Benz, which was still in its formative years, and had not yet merged with Mercedes. In 1909, the company had finished construction on a large new factory in Mannheim, and had just begun production of their race cars and consumer automobiles. In 1909, their Blitzen Benz—driven by the Frenchman Victor Hémery—destroyed all previous speed records set by automobiles, ships, and even airplanes when it reached 202.7 km/h (about 126 mph). Interestingly, the company stopped participating in road races this year—in fact, an industrywide boycott occurred after the 1908 Grand Prix, in which Mercedes won first and Benz took second. Talk about auto drama! Nevertheless, Rudaux's sprightly maquette gives us a sense of the revolutionary moment. As with the previous drawing, no printed copy exists. In top left margin, a hand written note in German likely addresses Benz manager Josef Brecht, and adds "not for reproduction." (Art Nouveau; Automobiles)

        Michelin : Maquette. 1911.

        Est: $8,000 - $10,000

ARTIST: HENRI EDMOND RUDAUX (1870-1927) SIZE: 31 7/8 x 15 7/8 in./81 x 40.2 cm DESCRIPTION: With the death of Ernest Montaut in 1909, his printer, Théodule Mabileau, continued to produce sporting prints with several artists who had been part of the Montaut studio, including Henri Rudaux. This maquette—though its purpose is mysterious—perseveres as a total charmer. A cigar-puffing Bibendum waves his palm at contenders of the 1911 Grand Prix race, who are rendered in hazy pastel hues against a wash of sunset-filtered landscape. But the question remains: what was the artist preparing for? The image appears not to have been used as one of the many published sporting prints which Mabileau printed and which was his specialty. Condition A-: restored pinholes in bottom corners; minor creases in image; staining along bottom edge. The son and student of painter Edmond Adolphe Rudaux, Henri Edmond's few posters all reflect his painterly eye. Here, for a French munitions society, he depicts a bucolic autumn afternoon, replete with beautiful foliage and fashionable shooters. A table ladened with shells and ammunition forms a diagonal across the image.

The Rudaux promotion for the French Munitions Society for Hunting and War, established by arms manufacturers Gevelot and Gaupillat focuses completely on shotgun shells and recreational target practice, an excellent pastime regardless of one's gender. It's interesting to compare this poster with a Cappiello design (see PAI-XXIX, 252) for the munitions firm. Whereas Cappiello used subtle humor and a grandiose sweep to advertise the "glories" of bagging some game, Rudaux chooses to keep things impeccably civil-no lithographic animals were harmed (or even present, apart from the human animal) in the production of his poster. Rudaux was a painter, illustrator and lifelong native of Paris. A pupil of his father, painter Edmond Adolphe Rudaux, he would also study under Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre.
