      Harold Rudolph (American/Louisiana, 1850-1884)

      Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Harold Rudolph (American/Louisiana, 1850-1884), "Barnyard", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 10 1/8 in. x 16 1/8 in., framed, overall 14 in. x 20 in. x 2 in. Note: Active in the 1870s and 1880s, Harold Rudolph was praised for his landscapes and portraits by New Orleans newspapers shortly after his arrival in 1873. Following the death of his brother-in-law and partner in portrait painting in 1877, Rudolph focused primarily on scenes of the Louisiana countryside, although relatively few of his landscapes exist today. The work offered here is a particularly rare scene from Rudolph depicting a working farmyard under the shadow of a classic moss-draped oak. As the workers take a brief respite, the implements of daily farm life surround them in carefully composed detail. The pastoral beauty of Louisiana’s landscape is relegated to the background, while the genre scene is moved to the foreground.

Harold Rudolph (German/Louisiana, ca. 1850-1883/4), "Choctaw Indians by Lake Pontchartrain"

      Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Harold Rudolph (German/Louisiana, ca. 1850-1883/4, act. New Orleans, 1873-1883/4) "Choctaw Indians by Lake Pontchartrain", 1876 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right, and Louisiana State Museum label en verso. Framed. 16" x 24", framed 20-3/4" x 28-1/4" Provenance: Previously in the Collection of William E. Groves, New Orleans, Louisiana. Exhibited: Exhibited at the Louisiana State Museum, 1971. Literature: Illustrated in Wiesendanger, Martin and Margaret, 19th Century Louisiana Painters and Paintings from the Collection of W. E. Groves, New Orleans: W. E. Groves Gallery, 1971, p. 90 Notes: The local newspapers New Orleans Republican and Daily Picayune documented Harold Rudolph's arrival in the city in 1873 and wrote of the quality of portraits. Art dealer W. E. Seebold provided the painter with a studio above his gallery on Canal Street. With the suicide in 1877 of his partner and brother-in-law Brutus Ducomman, Rudolph turned his attention to landscapes. The painting "Choctaw Indians by Lake Pontchartrain" depicted three women with a large woven basket. The Choctaw were known for the artistry of their baskets. Rudolph often included Native American Indians in his paintings as they peacefully coexist in the vast natural landscape.

      Harold Rudolph (American/Louisiana, 1850-1884)

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Harold Rudolph (American/Louisiana, 1850-1884), "Bayou Landscape", 1879, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, "H. W. Gear" stamp on stretcher, 29 in. x 36 in., framed, overall 33 in. x 40 1/8 in. x 2 1/4 in. Note: Harold Rudolph was active in New Orleans in the 1870s and 1880s during a period when many of the great Louisiana landscape artists of the state were in their prime. While less is known today about Rudolph than some of his contemporaries, he was praised in the New Orleans Republican and Daily Picayune newspapers shortly after his arrival in the city for both his portrait paintings and landscapes. Rudolph exhibited his work with the W.E. Seebold Gallery on Canal Street where he had a studio on the upper level and later at their location on Prytania Street. Following the death of his brother-in-law and partner in portrait painting in 1877, Rudolph focused primarily on scenes of the Louisiana countryside, although relatively few of his landscapes are extant today. Particularly skilled at depicting sunsets and sunrises, in the rare canvas offered here from 1879, Rudolph masterfully portrays a fiery sunset at last glow reflected in the bayou in the foreground. The scene is framed by darkened cypress trees and a moss-draped oak, while a cabin is hidden within the shadows. A lone figure contemplates the sunset from his perch beneath the oak tree adding a sense of narrative and charm to the timeless scene.

    • Harold Rudolph, (German/Louisiana, ca. 1850-1883/4), "Cabins on the Gulf Coast", oil on canvas, 16" x 30", framed 21-1/2" x 35-1/2"
      May. 22, 2022

Harold Rudolph, (German/Louisiana, ca. 1850-1883/4), "Cabins on the Gulf Coast", oil on canvas, 16" x 30", framed 21-1/2" x 35-1/2"

      Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Harold Rudolph (German/Louisiana, ca. 1850-1883/4) "Cabins on the Gulf Coast" oil on canvas signed lower left and with a "W. E. Seebold, New Orleans" stencil en verso. Framed. 16" x 30", framed 21-1/2" x 35-1/2" Notes: Harold Rudolph arrived in New Orleans in 1873, and his abilities as an artist were lauded by both the New Orleans Republic and the Daily Picayune newspapers. Art dealer William E. Seebold supported Rudolph, as he did many local artists, by giving him a studio above his Canal Street gallery, exhibition opportunities and frequent dinners at his home. The Seebold stencil on the verso of the canvas reflects the relationship between patron and artist. Initially a portrait painter, Rudolph focused on southern landscapes after the death of his brother-in-law and portrait partner.

Seebold, New Orleans canvas stamp en verso, 10 in. x 14 in., period gilded frame. Note : Active in New Orleans in the 1870s and 1880s, Rudolph was praised for his portrait paintings and landscapes in local journals. Rudolph exhibited his work at the W.E. Seebold Gallery on Canal Street and kept a studio on the level above. Rudolph was most adept with sunsets and nocturnal skies; in this painting, the Louisiana landscape lies below approaching storm clouds. Two large live oak trees stand prominently along the edge of the meandering bayou. As often found in his work, a pirogue with three figures plies the water. Few of Rudolph's Louisiana landscapes are extant. His work is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, LSU Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art."
