Johannes Rudolphi (1877-1950), Oil Painting 'Schorfheide', 1924

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on canvas, mounted on cardboard Germany, 1924 Johannes Rudolphi (1877-1950) - German landscape painter Signed and dated lower right, 'J. Rudolphi 1924' Delicate gilt frame Overall dimensions, framed: 33 x 44 cm Provenance: Estate of the artist's family This small, moody painting by Johannes Rudolphi shows the Schorfheide, one of the largest continuous forestlands in Germany, northeast of Berlin. The beautiful, summery colours give the painting its pleasant, almost homely appearance. The characteristic pink colour of the heathers covers the ground; the rich green of the forest covers the left edge of the canvas and crosses over to the right side. The landscape painting is crowned by the delicately blue and pink coloured sky, which gently mirrors the colours of the heathlands. The painting is generally in good condition but slightly soiled and with loss of colour around the edges. It displays some craquelure. The painting is signed and dated lower right, 'J. Rudolphi 1924'. The frame shows some signs of use. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 33 x 44 cm; the size of the canvas is 30 x 41 cm. Johannes Rudolphi (1877-1950) Johannes Rudolphi was born in Potsdam to a physician and went to Munich to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Arts Berlin and began to focus more and more on landscape painting. In 1901, Rudolphi married the Potsdam artist Margarete Haeberlin, with whom he had two sons. One of them, Wolfram born in 1906, followed in his parents' footsteps as a painter and graphic artist. Johannes Rudolphi regularly exhibited at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung [Great Berlin Art Exhibition] and joined the Berlin Secession under the direction of Max Liebermann, painting predominantly Brandenburg landscapes in different seasons.
