Ruetz, Michael: Farewell to Italy

"A Farewell to Italy". 1987. Vintage dye transfer print. 18,5 x 57 cm (47 x 59,2 cm). Signed, titled and editioned a.p./15 by the photographer in pencil as well as photographer's edition stamp and authentication stamp on the verso. The dye transfer process is often referred to as the most permanent and intense color printing technique. Its origins lie in the 1870s and the process, as we know it today, was first marketed in 1947 by Kodak. However, due to the time-consuming and expensive process, as well as the shortage of material, dye transfer prints are rarely produced anymore. Renowned photographers such as Harry Callahan, William Eggleston and Harold Edgerton all worked extensively with this technique. In the 1980s Michael Ruetz created a larger body of work comprising panoramic color landscapes and cityscapes, many of which were published in thematic books. The dye transfer technique beautifully captures the poetic and majestic nature of Ruetz's vast landscapes. - One light handling crease in lower margin, otherwise a rich print in near excellent condition.
